Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Robert.
Hi J. Robert, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My professional journey began as a Corporate Technical Senior Trainer in the medical and dental insurance industry, where I worked with nationally recognized organizations and large-scale call centers including Prudential, Aetna U.S. Healthcare, Aetna, and Kaiser Permanente. I was deeply rooted in corporate leadership, training systems, and operational excellence. However, as the industry evolved and I was laid off, I encountered an unexpected obstacle—I was consistently told I was “overqualified,” leaving doors closed despite my experience.
Entrepreneurship had always been part of my DNA, but this season tested my faith and resolve. My closest friend and business collaborator—a self-made entrepreneur—persistently encouraged me to allow him to mentor me in the tax industry. After exhausting every financial resource and reaching rock bottom, I humbled myself and said yes. What followed were three refining years of learning, failing, rebuilding, and unlearning—trying to do things my own way instead of God’s way.
As a committed Christian believer, I reached a breaking point where I knew effort alone was no longer enough. I needed divine direction. Through prayer, surrender, and obedience, God began to reshape my mindset—from striving in my own strength to operating in my God-given strengths. I started this journey in 2008, and in 2011, God granted the breakthrough I had been praying for.
That breakthrough came when I aligned strategy with stewardship. Instead of chasing everyone, I focused on a niche God had uniquely prepared me for—the Direct Sales industry and independent contractors. Having worked as an independent contractor in direct sales since 1987, I understood the challenges, opportunities, and financial blind spots within the industry. This clarity allowed me to serve with authority, confidence, and authenticity.
God began connecting me with the right leaders—people who saw the vision, recognized the value, and trusted the calling on my life. Then, in a moment that can only be described as divine acceleration, Christ opened a door. In a single day, during a one-hour seminar on the tax advantages of owning a home-based business, I gained 50 new clients. What would normally take years happened in an hour—proof that when God opens a door, no man can shut it.
From that point forward, the business scaled with purpose. By 2011, I was already preparing taxes and conducting tax meetings and reviews virtually—well before the marketplace was forced to adopt remote models during COVID. Today, I operate a nationwide tax practice offering tax preparation, strategic tax advisory, payroll, accounting, bookkeeping, corporate setup, and corporate and nonprofit tax services. My work is rooted not just in compliance, but in education, empowerment, and long-term financial stewardship.
Through the mentorship of a faithful friend, unwavering trust in God, and a relentless commitment to excellence, I have been blessed to live a semi-retired lifestyle for over a decade. I’ve learned to build businesses that serve people, honor God, and create sustainable freedom. I now work my business around my life, not my life around my business, fully embracing the power of time compression, leverage, and kingdom-minded entrepreneurship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my greatest challenges was navigating the steep learning curve of tax law while simultaneously confronting a deeper internal battle—my mindset. Early on, I was determined to do things my way, relying on conventional business strategies and my own understanding, rather than fully integrating my relationship with God into my decision-making. God began to show me that true growth would not come from repeating traditional methods, but from embracing a paradigm shift—doing things unconventionally, with faith, obedience, and trust in His direction.
Confidence was another major hurdle in the beginning. Stepping into a new industry required me to silence self-doubt and lead with conviction before I felt fully prepared. During that season, I leaned heavily on the relationships God had already entrusted to me and the skill sets He had developed in me over years of leadership, training, and communication. Instead of chasing strangers, I focused on serving those who already knew me, allowing trust to bridge the gap between my past experience and my new calling.
By honoring relationships, staying teachable, and aligning business strategy with faith, God transformed my struggles into strength. What began as uncertainty became a foundation for credibility, confidence, and sustainable growth—proof that when faith leads and stewardship follows, results come with purpose.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about VIRTUAL ONLINE TAX AND SERVICES LLC?
We strive to operate as a true full-service tax practice, grounded in excellence, integrity, and stewardship. While I am not a CPA, the work we perform does not require one, and our expertise lies in delivering strategic, compliant, and results-driven tax services. We specialize in serving Small Business Owners, Independent Contractors, and clients who value proactive tax advisory rather than reactive tax preparation.
In our experience, most taxpayers have a purely transactional relationship with their tax professional—one focused solely on preparing a return after the year has already ended. Very few professionals take the time to educate their clients, identify behavioral or structural issues that increase tax liability, or advise on lawful strategies to reduce it. While clients often expect this level of guidance, the reality is that most CPAs, accountants, and tax professionals are compensated to prepare returns—not to advise, strategize, or coach throughout the year.
We intentionally operate differently.
Our approach is relational, not transactional. We believe that trust, communication, and education are essential to responsible financial stewardship. We walk alongside our clients throughout the year, helping them understand their numbers, make informed decisions, and set clear expectations so there are no surprises when tax season arrives. By aligning strategy with compliance, we help our clients position themselves for the best possible tax outcome—fully within the law.
This relationship-driven model creates clarity, accountability, transparency, and a far better overall client experience. Over 90% of our clients are served virtually, with the remainder meeting with us in person. We operate by appointment only, allowing us to give each client focused, intentional attention. Our goal is not only to remove fear and confusion around taxes, but to help our clients understand, embrace, and even look forward to filing their returns with confidence.
Customer satisfaction and education are at the heart of what we do. While it is impossible to please everyone, our consistency, integrity, and results speak for themselves. We believe that when clients are informed, empowered, and properly advised, they become better stewards of their resources—and that is a responsibility we take seriously.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a first-generation American of Mexican and Spanish descent, I was raised primarily in East Los Angeles, where my foundation was shaped by faith, family, and community. I attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School from first through eighth grade, an experience that instilled discipline, service, and respect for others at an early age. Growing up in a culturally rich and hardworking environment deeply influenced my values and my commitment to people.
I am a natural people person—personable, professional, and compassionate by nature. In 2001, my faith journey took a defining turn when I became a Born-Again Christian. That decision transformed not only my personal life but also my approach to business. As a Christian entrepreneur, I am intentional about aligning my service, work ethic, and leadership with strong moral values, integrity, and accountability. I believe business is a calling and an opportunity to serve others with excellence while honoring God.
Beyond my professional work, I enjoy playing golf and speaking publicly on topics such as leadership, mindset, sales and marketing, personal development, and Christian business development. I am passionate about helping individuals and organizations grow both professionally and personally by challenging how they think, lead, and serve.
I am also a contributing author to an international best-selling book series, The Art of Connection, a 365-day collection of quotes from entrepreneurs, business owners, and influencers around the world. Each volume is built around a central theme designed to inspire intentional growth. The first book focuses on gratitude, the second on abundance, and the third—scheduled for release in 2026—centers on resilience.
At the heart of everything I do is a clear mission: to educate my clients, empower them with knowledge, and give them confidence in their tax and financial decisions. I believe clarity builds confidence, and when clients understand their tax situation, they are better equipped to steward their resources wisely and move forward with peace of mind.
