Rising Stars: Meet Melissa Bontempt of Palmdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Bontempt.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has been anything but easy. I found my way to the arts through lived experience, survival, and ultimately healing. I grew up not feeling like I fit in anywhere. Being of mixed race – with a white mother and black father (who was not in the picture) often left me feeling confused about where I belonged. I got in a lot of trouble as a juvenile just trying to fit in. At a young age, that confusion turned inward and became self-hate. I couldn’t understand why I was made the way I was, or why I felt so disconnected from the world around me. For so long my life was shaped by circumstances that limited my voice. Circumstances that I thought I could not control. Who knew. I was under the impression that my voice did not matter, and so I limited myself. I spent so many years in and out of jails, prisons, camps, and Youth Authorities. I woke up one day in my prison cell and was like “What the hell am I doing”. All of a sudden I felt a sense of urgency to get things right in my life. It wasn’t until I began to love myself that I discovered my true power. Then I discovered storytelling and performance which began to give me an understanding of my own power. The arts became a lifeline, a way to process my trauma, reclaim my identity, and continue healing parts of myself I didn’t yet have language for. Through consistent training with Award winning Actor, Director and co-founder of the Robey Theatre Ben Guillory, I have committed myself to learning the craft of acting and filmmaking, not just as an artist but as a storyteller with something meaningful to say. Today I am an award winning actress, filmmaker, and the founder of a nonprofit organization, California Performing Arts AV, dedicated to healing through the arts. I create projects and opportunities that center overlooked voices, explore themes of identity, transformation, and resilience. Im proud of how far I have come, but even more committed to where I am going.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. My journey has been marked by setbacks, identity struggles, issues with addiction, homelessness and periods of deep uncertainty – not to mention incarceration. For a long time, I carried deep self-hate and pain from situations growing up – and I didn’t know how to name or ask help for it. Recovery, healing, and rebuilding my life required humility, accountability, and a willingness to be honest with myself. It meant learning to accept support, doing the internal work, and choosing growth even when it was uncomfortable. None of it happened overnight. In the creative world, I also faced the challenge of entering an industry that often overlooks people with unconventional paths. I had to build confidence, develop discipline, and create my own opportunities through training, mentorship, and persistence. Those struggles shaped the artist and leader I am today. They gave me empathy, resilience, and a deep commitment to telling stories that reflect real lives and real transformation. What once felt like my greatest weaknesses have become the foundation of my purpose and my work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Professionally, I am a working actress, writer, and producer with a growing body of film, television, and theatre credits. I am currently represented by Aqua Talent and managed by Golden Artists Entertainment, and I continue to invest in my craft with ongoing on-camera and scene study training, My screen work spans independent films, shorts, and major productions. I played the lead role of Mrs. Caroline Fritchi in Fritchi Manor — a psychological thriller I also wrote and produced — which has earned recognition on the festival circuit and is available to watch at www.caperformingartsav.org. I’ve also appeared in supporting and background roles in productions such as The Accountant 2, Cold Water, Family Switch, and Salsa Love, as well as television and theatre work that highlights my range and versatility. Across all mediums, I bring professionalism, dedication, and emotional authenticity to every performance — qualities that directors, peers, and collaborators consistently recognize and value. With all of that I believe that what truly sets me apart is my life experience – its mine and has been the best inspiration.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me most is knowing myself, loving myself, and living my life on my own terms. For a long time, I lived disconnected from who I truly was, shaped by external expectations, survival mode, and self-doubt. Not knowing myself made it easy to abandon myself, and that disconnection showed up in every area of my life.
Doing the work to truly know myself has been transformative. It’s allowed me to understand my worth, my boundaries, and my voice. Loving myself didn’t come easily it was a practice, I built through healing, accountability, and learning to extend compassion to parts of myself I once rejected. Living life on my own terms means choosing alignment over approval. It means creating a life and career that reflect my values, my truth, and my lived experience, rather than trying to fit into boxes that were never designed for me. That freedom is everything to me, because it’s what allows me to show up fully — as an artist, a leader, and a human being — and to create work that is honest, intentional, and meaningful. I want my films to show that honesty.
