Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawid Komodzinski.
Hi Dawid, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Dawid Komodzinski. I started INSSKI Construction after more than a decade of hands-on building experience across residential and commercial jobs, both in the U.S. and Europe. When I arrived in Los Angeles, I saw the huge gap between the quality of small local contractors and the high standards demanded in public works. That’s when I made the decision: I would build a company that could bridge that gap and become a reliable construction partner for government agencies.
Starting with just a handful of tools and two skilled workers, we pursued small repair jobs and learned to navigate the complex world of public contracting. Our breakthrough came when we successfully completed repairs for the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors — a project that tested our capabilities with tidal coordination, steel fabrication, float replacement, and strict compliance. Since then, we’ve completed dozens of high-performance projects with LA County, LAUSD, and other agencies, gaining a reputation for clear communication, clean execution, and ethical project management.
INSSKI is now a recognized contractor in the public works space, featured in LA Contractor Magazine and supported by the LA Regional Contractor Development Program. We’ve grown not just in scale but in mission: to help build safer, more sustainable infrastructure for communities, while also mentoring other contractors through compliance, prequalification, and now — AI tools for government work.
I’m proud of the journey we’ve taken — not just because we’ve built strong structures, but because we’ve built trust.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No — not at all. Like most small business owners in construction, I’ve had to navigate challenges that test your patience, finances, and sometimes even your belief in the work you’re doing.
In the early days, one of the biggest struggles was simply being taken seriously. Public agencies require a long list of registrations, insurance, bonding, certifications — and if you’re a small, new contractor, you’re often locked out of opportunities no matter how qualified you are on the field. I had to learn everything the hard way — from interpreting legal requirements to building compliant payroll systems — often while still trying to finish jobs, pay workers, and keep the lights on.
Cash flow was another hurdle. Public projects typically pay on net-30 or even net-60 terms, but payroll and material costs don’t wait. I had to get creative with financing, rely on credit, and negotiate with suppliers — all while making sure the quality never slipped and our name stayed clean.
There were times when equipment didn’t show up, when we bid on five projects and didn’t win a single one, or when one mistake in paperwork nearly cost us a contract. But each one of those challenges became part of our foundation. We built systems to prevent mistakes, created training so our team is empowered, and made relationships that now bring repeat work and trust.
It hasn’t been smooth — but every obstacle helped build the muscle we needed to survive, grow, and now guide others through the same journey.
We’ve been impressed with INSSKI Construction, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My company, INSSKI Construction, is a Los Angeles–based general contracting firm specializing in public works and coastal infrastructure. We’re a certified small business with a Class B license, and we’ve carved out a niche by focusing on high-compliance, high-trust projects for agencies like the Department of Beaches and Harbors, L.A. County Internal Services Department, and local school and college districts.
Our team is known for delivering complex projects—dock repairs, ADA restrooms, epoxy coating of marine tanks, building shoring, and more—with professionalism, precision, and care. What sets us apart isn’t just the quality of our work—it’s the systems we’ve built behind the scenes: internal SOPs, safety programs, compliance tracking, and a strong digital infrastructure using tools like QuickBooks, Bluebeam, and ClickUp.
We are proud to be one of the few emerging contractors in Southern California bridging traditional trades with modern, scalable systems. Our ability to self-perform critical scopes while managing subcontractors with transparency allows us to stay lean while maintaining quality.
We’ve recently been featured in L.A. Contractors Magazine as a rising leader in Public Works—highlighting our commitment to integrity, small-business resilience, and community impact. That recognition meant a lot to us—it validated years of effort to grow the right way, without shortcuts.
More than just a builder, INSSKI is a trusted public partner. Our work helps cities and counties serve their residents better. Whether it’s a beachside renovation, a school restroom retrofit, or a floating dock inspection program—we show up with the same focus: solve the problem, protect the taxpayer’s dollar, and leave the site better than we found it.
If there’s one thing I’d want your readers to know, it’s this: we’re not just here to win bids—we’re here to build trust, one project at a time.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious, independent, and driven by a deep sense of responsibility. I wasn’t the loudest in the room, but I was always observant—watching how things worked, how people solved problems, and always thinking a few steps ahead. I liked taking things apart (sometimes without putting them back together) and figuring out how things functioned, which eventually translated into my interest in building and construction.
I’ve always been hands-on. Whether it was fixing things around the house, helping family members with tasks, or organizing small ventures with friends, I enjoyed creating order out of chaos. I had a strong work ethic from a young age—partly because I had to, and partly because I wanted to prove that I could carry weight beyond my years.
Looking back, a lot of who I was growing up has shaped the way I lead today. I still carry that same curiosity, but now I channel it into systems, workflows, and building a company with structure and purpose. I’ve learned how to use both sides of myself: the practical builder and the strategic thinker.
If I had to sum it up: I was always building something—whether it was with my hands, my ideas, or my determination.
