Today we’d like to introduce you to Melodie Young.
Hi Melodie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My dad was a salsa musician, so I was always somewhat surrounded by music my entire life and then when I turned about 18 or so and moved out, I found myself curious to see what it would be like to record a song in a real studio… So like any curious and somewhat rebellious teenager, I hit up random producers on Craigslist (probably the dumbest thing a naive 18 yo could do) but somehow ended up working out and I found myself at that studio everyday that entire summer. From there on, I got signed to a label and started releasing pop music. As time passed, and covid hit- I was no longer able to work with that label and wanted a change of scenery from the music industry in Toronto. That led to me packing my bags and making the move to LA to see what it was like… I came here, fell in love with it and started this new era of alternative rock music. Still actively songwriting in all genres, I’ve found a new love for alt-rock and trying to pave a path for myself in that genre as an artist and I’m so happy that I did. I’ve never felt more connected with myself as an artist as I do now and I feel like this whole era has given my younger self a space to say what’s really on her mind.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth. TMJ, two car accidents, Covid, moving to a new city, having a baby, going through the process of getting a visa, missing my dad’s funeral so I wouldn’t forfeit my visa, all things that I went through and yet- I’d do it all again to be where I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for my music as an R&B/Pop artist/songwriter but I’m diving into the Alternative Rock space (as an artist) and loving it. I will always be a songwriter in all genres, I love writing and that has no boundaries for me sonically.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t listen to false promises and create opportunities for yourself. Listen to your mentors and listen to your gut.. it’s probably right.
