Life & Work with Chelsea Newman of Los angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Newman.

Hi Chelsea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a creative. When I was three, I watched my grandmother perform in a play, and that moment planted the seed for everything that followed. By ten, I was taking singing and acting classes and throwing myself into anything artistic. After graduating college in New York, I felt ready for a new beginning and made an impulsive, on-a-whim move to LA.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Moving away from everything comfortable was already a huge adjustment. And on top of that, the constant rejection and the pressure to feel like I need to prove myself can take a toll on your self esteem. I work every day to push back against that and remind myself why I started and what I’m capable of.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work spans film and theater, with a strong focus on immersive, character driven performances. Most recently, I appeared opposite Robert De Niro and Zach Braff in George Gallo’s The Comeback Trail, which was released earlier this year.

I also just completed two runs of Tracy Letts’ Killer Joe, portraying Dottie…an experience I’m especially proud of. That role allowed me to fully inhabit a character of remarkable complexity, balancing innocence, vulnerability, and deeply rooted trauma. Diving into Dottie’s inner world reaffirmed my love for transformative character work.

I specialize in offbeat, emotionally layered characters…roles that sit at the intersection of fragility and resilience. Juliette Lewis’s early work…especially Kalifornia, Natural Born Killers, and The Other Sister has had a profound influence on my creative voice. What sets me apart is my commitment to truthfully exploring difficult psychological terrain while maintaining a sense of humanity and unpredictability.

How do you think about happiness?
My dog Cleo…she makes everything better. Family and friends, good food, a glass of red wine, traveling, romance, the ocean, the gym, and any excuse to dress up… preferably all in the same week, and definitely not in that order. 😉
