Check Out Mary Wu’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Wu.

Hi Mary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I never planned on becoming an artist. I have always felt creative, but life was so busy that I kept pushing it aside. Then a few years ago I got very sick with ME/CFS, long COVID, and fibromyalgia, and I became bedridden. During that time art became a quiet lifeline for me. Painting was the one thing I could do lying down, just one gentle brushstroke at a time, and it slowly helped me find joy again.

When I started to recover I wanted to hold on to that feeling. I began sharing small watercolor videos online as MamaPandaPainter, first with friends and then with anyone who found them. People connected with the heart behind it, the idea that handmade and imperfect art is beautiful, and that creativity is something anyone can enjoy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. My biggest challenge was rebuilding my life after being very sick for a long time. Even after I was no longer bedridden, my energy was limited and I had to move slowly. Learning to create while still taking care of my health was a slow and unpredictable process.

Another challenge was finding the courage to share my art openly. I always felt creative, but I still worried about how people might judge my simple and handmade style. Putting my work out there felt very vulnerable at first, and I was not sure how it would be received. Little by little I learned to trust the process and create with honesty.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a watercolor artist who loves creating simple and joyful paintings. I focus on teaching beginners and helping people feel relaxed and confident with a brush in their hands. Most of my work is about making art feel friendly and approachable, no pressure and no perfection needed.

I share short watercolor videos as MamaPandaPainter and I also teach classes for kids and adults. I enjoy creating pieces that feel warm and handmade, and I love showing people how the smallest techniques can create something beautiful. I think that is what I am known for, a gentle style and a calm and encouraging way of teaching.

Right now I am finishing my first watercolor card book, which has been a dream project. I am proud that something that started as a quiet hobby during a very hard time has grown into a community of people who paint with me. What sets me apart is the simple joy behind my work and the belief that anyone can create something lovely with just a few colors and a little patience.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think success changes depending on the season of life I am in. Some days success means I finished a painting and I feel proud of it. Other days success is feeling connected to my children or having a calm and meaningful moment with them. And sometimes success is simply finding a moment of peace in the middle of a full day.

For me success is not one big achievement. It is a collection of small wins that add up over time. It is choosing joy, staying present, and making a little space for creativity even when life is busy. It is growing at my own pace and remembering that progress can be gentle. If the day ends with even a small spark of joy, I consider that success.
