Check Out Millicent Rovelo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Millicent Rovelo.

Hi Millicent, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to where I am included many years of schooling and many more of training. I completed my undergraduate degree at UCLA and obtained my medical degree from USC. I then completed a general surgery residency followed by an additional plastic surgery residency.

When I graduated from my plastic surgery residency I elected to open my own practice in Beverly Hills. For almost 10 years, I have been growing my practice and perfecting my surgical skills and results.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not smooth! Despite all our years of medical schooling and training, we are not taught how to be business owners or how to do any kind of marketing or advertising. Much of this has to be self-taught and learned through a series of trial and error. The business and marketing aspects of the practice are actually much harder than the surgical procedures, if only because they are less familiar. I am also not very good at self-promotion. I just want to take care of patients and do my surgeries, but somewhere along the way, I also have to do the self-promotion and social media marketing as well. I’m not comfortable with this but I know that it is necessary.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a plastic surgeon. I do cosmetic and reconstructive procedures on the face, breast and body. This includes procedures like face lifts, breast implants, breast reconstruction and body contouring procedures. Many of my patients have lost significant amounts of weight and require removal of extra skin – this involves procedures such as tummy tucks, body lifts, facelifts, breast lifts, etc. I find these procedures incredibly rewarding because it really allows these patients to see the final results of their hard work and weight loss journey. Many surgeons will avoid doing these cases because they are big procedures and require a lot of time and effort both in the operating room and post-operatively. I really enjoy doing them because the transformations are so dramatic and so rewarding on so many levels.

I also have a podcast that I do every week with my partner, Dr. Jay Calvert. It is called the ‘Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Podcast’ and we have been doing weekly episodes for over 6 years. The podcast has become a staple for both prospective patients as well as plastic surgery trainees around the world. We provide accurate information about plastic surgery in an educative and entertaining format.

In addition, I recently had a TV show released on TLC entitled ‘About Face.’ In this show, we perform reconstructive surgeries on patients with facial differences. The show is mostly focused on the patients and their stories, and highlights the procedures that we can do to address their concerns.

What were you like growing up?
I was the child that always knew that I wanted to be a doctor. I made that decision when I was eleven and I never wavered or changed my mind. I was very academically competitive and determined to be at the top of all of my classes. The “winning” aspect of being the best was a strong motivating factor to study and try hard, probably to an extreme degree at times. At the same time, I always. had a strong interest in fashion and design. Throughout high school and college I always had a job at high-end fashion retailers. I loved reading fashion magazines and followed all of the early fashion blogs (looking at you Blonde Salad and Man Repeller). I think being a plastic surgeon is a natural expression of these dual interests – medicine meets design
