Conversations with Jon Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Curry.

Hi Jon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born in Seattle, WA and briefly lived on a working cattle ranch in Eastern Washington just outside of Cheney after Mother remarried. Began doing theater at age 11 at the Spokane Community Theater in their production of Oliver. Worked professionally as a child actor for several years in Spokane area. We relocated to Mercer Island where I attended Mercer Island High School. I attended the University of Washington where I majored in Drama with a french minor. After UW, I attended Temple University’s prestigious MFA Acting program. Upon graduating, I moved to NYC for 5 years where I worked in theater, film, television commercials and Voice over. I also met my wife of 26 years, Ann. We moved to Los Angeles in 1999 where I signed with both theatrical and commercial agencies and have been working professionally in the entertainment industry ever since. We have 3 daughters who have also all worked in the industry at various times. Our youngest is a senior at Mira Costa High School.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s no such thing as as a “smooth road” for an actor, although some folks have certainly experienced various level of success very quickly. That hasn’t been my experience. I have been incredibly fortunate to have great representation along the way and have basically worked every SAG/Aftra contract imaginable with the exception of Stunt performer and Dancer! The road is always bumpy and unpredictable as an actor, especially in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world. I frequently tell young actors that it is imperative that they are multi-hyphenate performers and creators in this new, constantly changing era of our industry. They must write and create content together in a collaborative manner, writing what they know. Pursue voice over, commercial work, independent film, TV and continue to take classes whenever possible.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Film, Television, Voice over, commercial work, Animation and Video games. Full resume available at IMDB.com

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
As production has fallen by about 50% percent in LA post Covid and post strikes, it’s difficult to say where we are headed. Production has increased overseas and in Canada but I’m hoping the Govenor’s new tax credit will stimulate domestic production, especially in film and television here in LA. Commercial work is still available here, and most of the major games and animation still cast primarily in LA.
