Check Out Brittany Bañuelos’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bañuelos.

Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The very first time I ever had any creative spark would be the year 2000. I was 7 years old and asked my parents for these little iridescent butterfly hair clips we saw walking through the shopping mall. I immediately went home, turned on Tragic Kingdom and started decorating my hair with as many butterflies as I could fit. It was the very first time I realized how much fun hair was. How self expressive and vital hair is to your image and confidence. It felt like magic. As I got into my pre-teens I became the go to friend, niece and sister for DIY hair color. I did hair in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and everywhere else in between. I knew I loved hair but it never occurred to me to turn my passion into a career. Fast forward 11 years I decided to give it a go and sign up for Cosmetology at Fullerton Community College. I have been a professional hairdresser since 2013, starting my career as an assistant at Carlton Hair Salon working under Lacy Rothrock. There they had an intense education program where I assisted for 9 months then graduated to work independently on the floor. Since then I’ve worked at many great hair salons and continue to learn from very talented colleagues.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although my love for hair is great it isn’t always “smooth sailing”. It can be difficult growing a steady clientele when first starting out, changing locations and even dealing with the fluctuations of the economy and rising cost of living. Having to adjust scheduling, raising prices when necessary and learning to run a small business are all growing pains in this industry. That being said, I would choose hairdressing in every life time. I’m all in.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work consists of a variety of precision haircuts and bright colors. I specialize in vintage-inspired haircuts and cut/color transformations.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best piece of advice I can give someone who is starting their career is we will forever be students as hairdressers. Give your time to learning, practicing and most importantly making mistakes. What separates a good hairdresser from a great one isn’t never making mistakes. It’s knowing how to fix one. Also remembering that comparison in the killer of success. We are not all meant to take the same path at the same time. Your journey is special and unique. Believe in it. Believe in yourself.
