Check Out Soumya Dash’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Soumya Dash.

Hi Soumya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Raised in Bangalore, the vibrant bustle of my hometown taught me to pay attention to community, to conversation, to the small but meaningful ways people move through the world. I now call San Francisco home, a place where the Californian coastlines continue to inspire me in ways both grounding and expansive. With over ten years of experience as a Product Designer, I’ve come to realize that what fascinates me most isn’t just the design work itself, but the human dynamics behind it. I’m endlessly curious about the people we design for, but equally about the people we design with, how emotions, relationships, and subtle, unspoken motivations influence collaboration. For me, thoughtful communication isn’t just a skill; it’s the foundation of teams that feel nurturing, positive, and deeply effective.

That inclination toward empathy started early. I grew up with two wonderful parents who believed in giving back to the community. Our dinner-table conversations rarely stayed within the boundaries of our home, they drifted toward the public library system that needed fixing, or the logistics of planning a neighborhood tree-planting drive. I didn’t know it then, but those conversations were shaping the lens through which I would view the world.

I began my academic journey studying Computer Science at Manipal University and started my career as a developer. But it was during that time, while collaborating with design teams, that something clicked. I found myself captivated by design thinking, the way designers approached problems, the artifacts they produced, and the clarity of intention in their process. That curiosity eventually led me to pursue a Master’s in Human–Computer Interaction in Indianapolis, Indiana, a decision that opened the door to the design world I’m part of today.

Outside of work, I try to stay connected to the slower, more tactile joys of life. You’ll often find me immersed in the classical dance form, Bharatnatyam, practicing calligraphy, lost in the rhythm of ink on paper, or leafing through my collection of 10,000 stamps, each one a tiny window into a story, a culture, a moment in time. And if there’s a dog nearby, you can bet I’m already making a new friend.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today has been anything but easy. Breaking into complex, confidential domains meant long nights of self-teaching with very limited resources.

Building a career in the US also meant being thousands of miles away from my family in India, missing important moments while I stayed focused on the work. Immigration hurdles added another layer of uncertainty. I lost opportunities, spent months in limbo without clarity, and went through a visa process that stretched to almost 24 months. But stepping back was never an option. During that time, I kept learning and contributing meaningfully by partnering with a UK-based startup to design an AI-powered Electronic Health Record tool that helps physicians streamline their daily workflows.

Every setback shaped me. Each challenge strengthened my resilience, deepened my empathy, and made me a more thoughtful designer and human being.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have mentors and friends who believed in me along the way. Their support is something I carry forward, and I’m grateful to now be in a place where I can offer that same encouragement to other designers navigating their own paths.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My design philosophy begins with a simple belief: Humans first. Whether I’m building AI tools, data visualizations, or enterprise dashboards, my goal is to give people back time—the most valuable resource we have. This mindset has guided my work at companies like Lacework (now part of Fortinet), Palo Alto Networks, and Tableau Software (now part of Salesforce), where my designs have consistently driven higher adoption, engagement, and efficiency.

A defining chapter of my career was my work with law enforcement agencies at Hitachi. As the sole designer on the project, I shadowed officers, conducted field research, and created a system that reduced bias, strengthened community trust, and improved crime prediction. The impact was measurable: robbery rates dropped by 7.7%, and carjacking decreased by 67%—clear proof that thoughtful design can influence real-world safety.

In cybersecurity, my work has been equally transformative. At Palo Alto Networks, I designed a cross-platform desktop app that reduced IT ticket volume by 25% and developed visualizations that helped service centers resolve issues faster. At Lacework, I introduced AI-driven capabilities into a complex security ecosystem. These tools are now used across industries from healthcare to finance to help security teams investigate incidents with greater speed and clarity. My time at Tableau deepened my expertise in Natural Language Processing and how intuitive, conversational experiences can bring data closer to people. I also explored the intersection of ethics and technology through a collaboration with Harvard Business School, where I designed the first dashboard for an Integrity and Compliance system.

Across public safety, cybersecurity, and AI, my mission remains consistent: to design systems that empower people, reduce friction, and build trust, making our physical and digital worlds safer and more humane.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned to trust the quiet wisdom of the path I’m on. Every job, every challenge, every unexpected turn has been preparing me in ways I couldn’t always see. I no longer measure my journey against anyone else’s timeline. I just keep showing up, learning, and holding on to a clear vision of the life I want to build. And I truly believe this: the opportunities you dream of have a way of arriving right on time, exactly when you’re ready to rise to them.
