Daily Inspiration: Meet Josh Carrasco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Carrasco.

Josh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, I’ve always had a camera in my hands. Whether it was taking stills of family or filming and editing skateboarding videos for my friends, I was constantly documenting.

After film school, I became a gaffer for a while in order to comprehend more about lighting as well as understand what should be expected as a crew member.

As a DP, I’ve shot anything from features, documentaries, commercials to music videos. The ability to collaborate with other artists, such as directors, production designers, etc., has profoundly shaped both my creative output and my career.

Becoming a DP has made me a better artist and leader. I am able to be a part of something larger than myself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been smooth in the sense that when struggles have arose, I’ve always found a way to solve them and move forward. However, there have been a few things that come to mind, such as getting people to trust me as a DP. Sometimes what can happen in the industry is getting pigeon holed. For example, I was a known L.A. gaffer for a long time so when I was making the switch to DP some were hesitate to take a chance on me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
These days I am primarily a Director of Photography (DP, DOP), also known as a Cinematographer. I’m the head of both the lighting and camera departments, responsible for interpreting the director’s vision though camera movement, lighting choices and composition. I work with the director and production from pre-production all the way through post-production.

I specialize in narrative storytelling–features, shorts and T.V.

I am most proud of my ability do a lot with less; to be precise and fast while maintaining quality. Often I find other DPs feel the need to pull every light off the truck. Usually the best solution is the most simple. I ask myself, “what are we lighting for?”
