Rising Stars: Meet Aidan Corcoran of Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aidan Corcoran.

Hi Aidan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for magic started when I was a kid and a family friend showed me a card trick. After that, I’d spend hours on YouTube learning new tricks to show my parents.

A few years later, I was working as a busboy at a restaurant when I found out about the Magic Castle. After hearing about it, I left my restaurant job with hopes of getting into the Castle. After passing a few auditions, I began performing regularly during the Castle’s brunch shows.

Since then, I’ve had the chance to perform for companies like Yelp, BMO, Kaiser, King’s Hawaiian, Cedars-Sinai, and Terranea Resort, as well as for people like Nicolas Cage, David Blaine, The Kid Laroi, Seth Rogen, Joe Manganiello, and Simon Helberg. I’ve also gotten to be featured on The Today Show, CNN, NBC, and in the LA Times.

I’ve been lucky enough to do over 300 shows at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, and was even being featured in the Castle’s “Future Stars of Magic” week. Now, I’m perform magic at private parties and corporate events across the country.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yeah there were definitely obstacles and I’m sure there’s many more to come. I remember not getting approved to work at the Magic Castle when I was 16 and that crushed me, but it is what forced me to get better.
For a while I struggled with weather or not I could even do this full time, I’m a big believer in outworking your fears and so although I was scared I had to put myself out there and start doing gigs.
I’ve also bombed on stage quite a few times and I’m sure there will be many more to come, to me that’s one of the worst feelings there is, standing in front of a group of people, telling jokes and not getting laughs, doing magic and not getting a reaction, it feels like you’re suffocating. Although it does definitely suck, you learn from it. I think performing arts are unique in that way and can be very humbling. Going from getting a standing ovation one show to silence in the next.
Some part of me has always not liked what I’m working on because I know it can be better, meaning I never feel very content and even though I don’t like the feeling, it is what forces me to push myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love magic that feels real. To me that’s usually the best stuff. Obviously I’m not trying to convince you what I’m doing is real but for that one moment I want it to feel like it might be. Mentalism is one of my favorite things since it is typically guessing things about people, you can make it more personal which not only is more interesting for them, but for me as well. If I’m being honest I don’t know what exactly it is that sets me apart from others, I’m just trying to be the best that I can be and hope what sets me apart comes along the way.

How do you think about luck?
It’s played a big role but at the same time I do believe luck is when opportunity meets preparation. There have been a lot of opportunities that have come my way that I have been scared for but thanks to my background of doing this for the past 10 years I’ve been luckily able to figure it out.
