Life & Work with Alex Mesrobian of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Mesrobian.

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve loved comedy for as long as I can remember. I come from a big, sarcastic family, so there was always plenty of humor and silliness flying around the dinner table. In third grade I got “Best Sense of Humor,” which, granted, isn’t a Peabody or Mark Twain Prize, but it gave me just enough confidence to keep chasing laughs.

In college, I joined the writing staff of The Koala, San Diego State’s humor magazine. One of the writers there also did stand-up and told me I should try it to see if my writing “works.” I got on stage and was instantly hooked.

I performed stand-up nonstop for years, and through that, I landed an opportunity to write for Klasky Csupo, the animation studio behind Rugrats and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. I ended up staying for twelve years. It was like a comedy boot camp in storytelling, collaboration, and character work.

Now I freelance as a writer, comedian, and scratch DJ, finding new ways to blend humor and music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s nothing smooth about the road in comedy. It’s a road full of potholes, detours, and orange cones that seem to multiply just when you think you’re in the clear. Comedy is built on rejection, jokes that don’t land, sets that bomb, scripts that never get made. It takes a lot of failure, patience, and persistence to find those moments of gold that make it all worth it.

Finding your voice as a writer and performer takes time. You have to experiment, fall on your face, and be honest with yourself. But if you keep showing up, you’ll eventually find what makes you uniquely funny.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a comedy writer who loves crafting tight, punchy jokes, mostly short-form stuff and one-liners. Lately I’ve been pulling more from my Armenian and Colombian background, which has turned out to be a great source for material. My delivery is pretty laid back and dry, and I tend to lean more on writing and timing than physical performance.

I’m proud of my versatility as a writer, but also of my musical side as a turntablist and scratch DJ. Comedy, just like music, has rhythm, and I love finding creative ways to blend the two. Whether it’s writing a bit, telling jokes on stage, performing in a scratch battle, I’m always thinking about timing and flow.

I think what sets me apart is my mix of influences and perspective. Having two distinct cultures in my background gives me a different way of seeing things. It lets me find humor in places that feel both personal and relatable.

What’s next?
My plans for the future are to keep performing stand-up and developing the TV pilots I’m working on. I want to keep creating original projects that combine my love for writing and comedy. I’m also planning to make another scratch music album and continue exploring how those two worlds can feed into each other.

Overall, I’m focused on growing as both a performer and a writer, and finding new ways to bring those creative sides together.
