Today we’d like to introduce you to Damian Acosta.
Damian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Argentina and I moved to the US with my family 25 years ago. Since I was a kid I wanted to be involved with the arts. And what I mean by that is that art is anything to me – painting, dancing, making music, cooking, and living. I grew up seeing beauty in movement, in sound, in color and that pushed me to explore every artistic avenue in which I could express my heart. And where am I today? I am still on a journey, not the final destination. I haven’t yet arrived to where I want and that’s okay, I embrace the process because I know this life is not a race but a marathon in which many wonderful opportunities are given.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Financial hardships, emotional hardships and everything in between. I had moments when I had to decide if I should use the money that I have to put gas in my car or buy food. It was hard for me to adapt in the beginning to my new life in the States. I was missing Argentina and always thought that I would go back, but life took a different turn and I had to make a decision that this is my life and I better enjoy all the gifts given to me. Now I carry my country in my heart and I hope I have represented it in the best way I could.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Some people know me as a painter, others as a tango dancer, and some as a DJ.But I don’t really see a separation between crafts – whatever I engage in, be sure that I will put all my heart into it.
A couple of months ago, I had my own art show, “Recuerdos de Rosario”, inspired by the Argentine tango. It was incredibly rewarding to share a little piece of my heart. Through color and paint I sought to capture the movement, the intimacy and the longing of tango. Just last weekend, I stepped into a different version of the same energy with a tango cabaret show that I had the honor to be part of. It was the physical counterpart of my paintings – expressing the same emotions with my body instead of the canvas and paintbrush.
Together, these projects give a sense of the kind of artist I am: someone who doesn’t confine themselves to a single medium, but lets emotion choose its form.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take the step forward. The first brushstroke, the first touch on the piano key, the first walk you take in tango – just take that step. Your dreams will not come true if you don’t start, because small actions, taken consistently, can grow into something great and extraordinary.
