Life & Work with Sanja Zdjelar of Skopje

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanja Zdjelar.

Hi Sanja, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began playing the violin as a child, captivated by its ability to speak without words. My journey has taken me through years of study, performance, and collaboration across many styles and stages. Today, I continue to explore the violin’s voice — always seeking new ways to connect, express, and share the beauty of music.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not always been smooth, but every challenge has shaped me as an artist. Like many musicians, I faced moments of doubt, demanding schedules, and the pressure to constantly grow and improve. Balancing the artistic and practical sides of a musical career can be difficult, especially in an ever-changing industry. Still, those experiences taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of staying true to my passion for music. Each obstacle ultimately deepened my connection to the instrument and to the art itself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What I’m most proud of is the authenticity I bring to my playing. Every note is an honest reflection of my own story and emotions, and I believe that sincerity resonates with listeners. What sets me apart is my curiosity — I’m constantly seeking new ways to interpret, connect, and grow, both as a musician and as a person.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I don’t often turn to books for inspiration — my creativity comes most naturally through sound and storytelling. I love composing music for films and visual projects, where emotion and imagery come together in such a powerful way. Working with moving pictures allows me to think beyond traditional structure and explore new colors, moods, and textures in my music.
I’m also inspired by listening to film scores and collaborating with other artists — that exchange of ideas always pushes me to grow and find new ways to express myself. For me, the best “resource” is simply staying curious and connected to the world of sound around me.
