Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliana Millar.
Hi Juliana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany until the age of 9. After that my mother and I moved to Olhão, Portugal where my mother’s family lived so they could help her raise me. My childhood wasn’t easy. Growing up, my father chose not to be in the picture. He was an American soldier in the army, stationed in Germany. One night while a little “tipsy” he met my mother, who was a stripper at that time and after a one night stand, here I am.
Fortunately I was lucky enough to have my grandfather, Emanuel Millar who I first met when I was a year and a half, while he was working on the film, Inglourious Basterds, shooting in Berlin. I didn’t know it then, but I see it now as a fortuitous acting connection.
Stepping in like a father, my grandfather has been my greatest support and proof that love can be gentle — that family can mean peace.
My grandfather told me from early on he saw something special in me, the same spark he saw in actresses he worked directly with, like Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett to name a few.
Over the years the plan he and I made was as soon as I turned 18, move to LA and pursue acting. That was a year ago.
I was lucky enough to have a room waiting for me in my grandfather’s home. And fortunate enough to not have to find a regular job to pay rent, so I could put all my energy into an acting career.
The day after I got off the plane at LAX, I was on my first set, doing background work, and after that I started submitting myself for anything I could and auditioning for who ever responded. Learning from every set I was fortunate enough to get on. With each experience, I could feel myself growing, not only as an actress but as a person.
I feel my story is about resilience and hope — about choosing light when you’ve mostly only experienced darkness. Acting gave me a voice when I didn’t feel I had one, and now I want to use that voice to inspire others who might feel hopeless or unseen.
This is only the beginning of my journey. I know one day when people hear the name Juliana Millar, they’ll think of strength, truth, and someone who never gave up.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve since learned, it’s not always supposed to be easy when you’re chasing something you truly love and feel is your calling.
Growing up, I faced challenges that shaped who I am today. My mother mistreated me — verbally, emotionally , and physically— and at school I was bullied, not just by kids, but sometimes even by adults who would make negative comments about me to my family in our small town in Portugal. I knew then, I didn’t want a regular life or a 9-to-5, like my mother expected me to have.
With my grandfather’s guidance and mentorship I asked him if he thought it was really possible, he said “you could do it and succeed if you solely focus on being good”. That thought never left my mind. The idea that I could create a life for myself that is meaningful, inspiring to others, and serve a purpose is what keeps me pushing forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I know I’m an actress. To me, acting is more than a job — it’s a way to connect, feel, and tell stories that matter. Growing up, I spoke Portuguese, German and some Spanish. At some point I might have intuitively felt it was important to learn to speak English not only if I wanted to communicate with my grandfather, but also star in American movies. So I started watching Films only in English. That experience also taught me how powerful storytelling can be and how deeply it can touch someone.
I speak four languages — Portuguese, German, English, and Spanish — which gives me the ability to connect with people and characters from different worlds and cultures. I love stepping into a role and bringing truth and authenticity to every moment, whether it’s a big scene or a small one.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Speaking four languages I feel gives me an advantage to connect with wider audiences and characters I’d like to portray.
So far, I’ve played a clown in a horror film, wearing a bright green wig and unrecognizable makeup.
I was also chosen by an Australia. Director to star in his film, in Thailand.
Growing up in Europe I feel gives me an advantage, to not be afraid of traveling and taking on new experiences.
I also feel showing kindness to everyone is important. Cast, Crew and people in general, that is a reputation that I want to obtain.
This industry means everything to me. It gave me a voice when I feel for a long time I didn’t have one. So far it’s given me a chance to inspire others. I’ve come to learn, Acting is not just a career — it’s becoming how I express myself. In hopes of leaving a positive mark on the world.
