Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gheur.
Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out in Hollywood, back when studios were just getting into digital stuff. I got lucky and worked on some big movies like Harry Potter, Men in Black, and Fast & Furious. I was the Creative lead on over 450 online campaigns. Those projects showed me how great stories can be when you mix them with tech innovation and breaking ground on the way we engage with stories and brand.
Soon, I saw that not just movies needed this. Brands like Coca-Cola, Budweiser, and Sony had the same problem: How do you really engage with people online? That’s why I started Signature Creative in 2004. I wanted a studio that could bring that Hollywood creativity, storytelling, quality and delight to brands but stay creative and elevate experiences.
Since then, we’ve done more than just entertainment. We’ve made online campaigns for global brands, helped Mattel change how kids play online, designed the branding for Pier Sixty-Six in hospitality, and shaped health programs with United Health Care. More than 20 years later, Signature still cares about the same things: being curious, telling stories, and making work that charms billions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any founder, I’ve had my ups and downs. In the beginning, it was a real pain getting clients to pay on time—not a fun part of owning a creative agency. Then, the 2008 crash hit, and we had to rethink our whole game plan. And to top it off, tech was changing super fast—the iPhone came out, following virtual worlds, and later explorations in mobile capabilities.
But these apparent problems turned into chances. I chose to go with the flow instead of resisting it. That let us do things we never expected, like becoming Qualcomm Labs’ and Ericsson One’s creative agency and working with DreamWorks to build PTCH, which was a very early version of TikTok. It was a fun way to mess with your photos and videos and share them, and it helped make social media what it is today.
These projects put Signature at the front of new tech. We were building some of the first AR, geofencing, virtual worlds, and hologram stuff ever. And it all reminded me that we were not just trying to keep up, but were helping make the future happen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What makes us special? We’re not just designers or tech people. We’re a mix of both—a worldwide team of creative minds, planners, and tech experts from different fields and cultures. Because of this, we were among the first to do some cool stuff with AR, geofencing, holograms, and virtual worlds. We even worked inside Qualcomm Labs and helped DreamWorks start PTCH, a social media idea that was kind of like TikTok before TikTok was big.
Since then, we’ve gone from just entertainment to things like destination branding with Pier Sixty-Six, wellness with Primary Health, and campaigns for Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Budweiser, Sony, and Mattel to name a few. We’ve stayed independent, quick on our feet, and picky about who we work with. We give our clients top-notch creativity, but with the speed of a startup.
Why are we the best? We don’t just follow trends; we help make them. We help brands stay on top by creating the stories, platforms, and experiences that shape how people relate to each other worldwide.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We are always curious and up for any challenge or problem to solve.
