Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Misisco.
Hi Matt, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I first moved to LA I started working as an assistant equipment manager at a photo studio Called Pier 59 West in Santa Monica. While working there I met a photographer named Kevin Lynch. After the studio shut down, leaving me jobless, I contacted Kevin to see if I could join his team as a lighting assistant. After a couple of years assisting Kevin and some other photographers I began photographing people on my own. I first started with headshots and soon started to shoot more creative portraiture. While assisting and shooting during the day at night I would shoot stand up comedy, which allowed me to connect with comedians and work with them one on one in the studio.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. The photography business is a difficult business to get into and once you’re in it can be hard to maintain a steady pace. I’m not the most out going person, unless you know me personally, so building professional relationships was hard for me at the beginning. Once I realized that I could just be myself and that my work was good it became much easier.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Over the years I have practiced many types of photography, but the one I’m most proud of is my portraiture. Mainly my work with stand up comedians. Like most people, I love stand up comedy. I love it so much that out of all the things I could shoot I chose stand up. I’m proud of the relationships that I’ve built with comedians and comedy venues. It has given me so many opportunities and experiences. I’ve shot comedians on stage and in the studio and its never a dull moment. The thing that sets me apart from most is my understanding of how stand ups think and my ability to make them feel comfortable.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Defining success is so personal. Everyone has their own definition and mine is my family. I realized I was successful once I had children. Because of them I push myself harder to be a better person and a better photographer.
