Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Thompson.
Hi Bryan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. Started playing the saxophone at 9 years old. Began playing in church and talent shows and things grew from there. I started of singing before anything then I got inspired to play jazz because that’s all my gran aunt and uncle would play in the car when I was with them. Eventually they got me an alto sax then a soprano then a tenor. My entire family is of Jamaican origins and I am the first generation America born and the only family member that pursued music professionally. Since then I’ve performed with and been on stage with many artists including Babyface whom I currently tour with, Mario, Faith Evans, H.E.R, Chante Moore and Toni Braxton.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been challenging. I didn’t come from a wealthy family so there’s all the financial limitations. Outside of that. Being a musician is not an easy career you’re often overlooked, underpaid and misunderstood. Moving to LA from Indiana was tough as I completely changed my entire environment from familiarity to a completely NEW world. New people and a whole new set of challenges. Broken promises and empty promises and you are constantly in a state of trying to stand out in the midst of thousands. Just to add to the challenges, I have sensory neural hearing loss in my right ear which did bring about challenges in school but not in music however.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full time musician. Doing music is the only thing I’ve ever done to live and survive.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
We all need mentors. Michael Jackson said study the greats and become greater. I try to learn as much as possible and go back to the past to see what’s changed, what’s stayed the same and how we can make changes. Networking will get you further than anything. More than looks, talent and even money. Go and connect with people who can help you get ahead.
