Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariela Segovia.
Mariela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Venezuela, where I first fell in love with acting through school plays. That early spark never left me. As a teenager, I continued performing and eventually joined my university’s theater company, where I began formal training. That’s also when I discovered improv, which became a core part of my artistic voice. I’ve been performing improv since 2014, first as part of the international troupe Improvisto in Caracas, and later in the U.S. and it remains one of my favorite tools for staying present, playful, and grounded in truth.
I hold a degree in Mass Communications with a focus on Audiovisual Arts. Before transitioning to the U.S., I worked professionally in media, producing and later hosting my own radio show. That experience taught me the power of voice, timing, and audience connection, skills that now enrich both my acting and podcasting work. Today, I’m based in Los Angeles, where I’ve acted in multiple projects including the viral music video Por Amor No Se Ruega (10M+ views), the web series Low Expectations, digital series like Mafia Boss Takes on High School for Reelshort, starred in the audience praised Reading of The Will play at the Short + Sweet Hollywood Theater Festival and currently host the storytelling podcast Better Late with Mariela Segovia. Whether on screen or behind the mic, I’m always driven by the same purpose: to tell stories that resonate, uplift, and reveal our shared humanity.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not smooth, but meaningful and I wouldn’t change a thing. Pursuing a creative career in a new country meant starting from scratch: no industry contacts, no family nearby, and a completely different culture and language to navigate. There have been times when I felt invisible or misunderstood, but those moments deepened my resolve.
Facing rejection in this industry is inevitable, but doing it while rebuilding your entire life abroad requires a special kind of resilience. Still, every “no” has brought me closer to the kind of artist I want to be, one with empathy, grit, and an unwavering connection to purpose. These challenges didn’t break me; they shaped me. Now, I infuse that lived experience into every character I play and every story I share.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an actress, storyteller, and bilingual media creator who specializes in emotionally grounded, culturally rich characters. I work across mediums, from film and digital series to voiceover and podcasting, and I’m known for my ability to blend vulnerability and humor in a way that feels deeply human. I’m particularly drawn to stories that explore identity, resilience, and transformation.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how I’ve carved a space for myself as a Latina artist with an international background. Whether it’s being cast as the romantic lead in Por Amor No Se Ruega (hand-selected by Daniel Elbittar), directing casting for upcoming U.S.-based projects, or connecting with an audience through Better Late, I bring a unique cross-cultural perspective that makes my work resonate beyond borders.
What sets me apart is not just range and training, but intentionality. I’m not waiting for permission to be seen, I’ve created platforms to share my voice and built a body of work across two countries that speaks to my commitment and growth. I trust the process, I trust my talent, and I’ve learned that fulfillment isn’t found at the finish line, it’s something you build along the way.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Self-belief, especially when no one else is clapping yet. The quiet kind that gets you through life’s obstacles, audition rejections, late-night shoots, and moments of doubt. I’ve had to believe in my path when the road wasn’t clear, when the budget was tight, and when the only validation came from within.
That self-trust, paired with emotional intelligence and a strong work ethic, is what’s allowed me to keep growing, evolving, and staying open to new opportunities. I’m resilient, but not in the “push through the pain” way, in the “keep choosing yourself with love” way. I believe that mindset, plus a deep respect for the craft, is what keeps me showing up with intention, no matter the circumstance.
