Today we’d like to introduce you to Hal Wang.
Hi Hal, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been shooting photos for over 10 years now. I was lucky enough to begin my photography journey working with professional models, celebrities, and established brands – rather than just taking pictures of friends. That early exposure set the tone for my style and shaped my approach to image-making.
I often joke that I started photography because I was too lazy to paint. There’s some truth to that. I studied painting from both Eastern and Western traditions since I was little. While I wouldn’t call myself a skilled painter, those years of training sharpened my sensitivity to color, composition, and the world around me.
I’ve always had a desire to capture the world – first with pencils and pens, then film, a Nokia phone, a digital camera, and now with professional gear. With every tool, the urge has been the same: to document people and moments that feel alive and honest. While I aim to capture unique, unrepeatable moments rather than impose my own vision, I’ve come to realize that my perspective inevitably seeps into every frame.
Over time, I found my niche: photographing people – always people – in ways that blend fashion and art. Through countless shoots and conversations, I’ve learned more than I ever expected. Starting with professionals gave me a false sense of mastery at first (I’ll admit, it made me a bit cocky, haha). But the moment I photographed a non-professional subject, I realized the pros were carrying my images – not the other way around. That humbling moment changed everything.
Since then, these ten years have been about constantly shooting, observing, and refining my craft – not to impress, but to become a better photographer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For me, photography always starts from the mental and emotional side. Taking a picture can be as simple as pressing a shutter button – or as complex as writing a poem. I’ve always had a knack for reading people through their eyes, but that sensitivity can be a double-edged sword. It becomes complicated when you start to truly understand what people think – especially when their thoughts are directed at your work.
My goal is to capture raw, unfiltered honesty in a person’s face. But honesty isn’t always beautiful, and it’s definitely not to everyone’s taste. On top of that, trying to shoot what others want can sometimes go against your own instincts – and navigating that tension is never easy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in artistic and creative portraiture, known for a style that is both emotional and elegant. My strength lies in capturing subtle expressions and revealing the inner personality of each subject. I take pride in my communication skills, which help dissolve the distance between myself and the person I’m photographing. Through genuine connection, I explore the many layers of a person and document different facets of who they are.
What sets me apart is the emotional depth I strive to reach – and how far I’m willing to go to connect with someone’s heart. I have a distinct perspective on beauty. I’m drawn to so-called “flaws” – wrinkles, scars, freckles, body shapes – and I love finding perfection within those imperfections. That’s why I focus more on inner beauty than surface appearance.
Rather than chasing trends, I aim to create portraits that feel timeless. I truly believe that everyone is beautiful – my role is simply to show it.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You can make money through photography, and you can also create art with it. But before stepping into the photography world, it’s important to consider which path you want to take – because the two can be very different. Each demands a different mindset, and while they can overlap, they don’t always lead to the same destination.
