Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Baker.
Christina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey has been a blend of resilience, reinvention, and the courage to follow my passions. I was raised by an immigrant Filipino nurse mother and a police officer father, and after their divorce when I was 10, I learned early on how to stand on my own. That independence drove me to focus intensely on my education, eventually earning a PhD in materials and inorganic chemistry.
My professional path began in the world of advanced materials—a field where I spent over two decades honing my expertise. In 2008, I took a bold step and started my own company. A few years later, in 2011, I ventured into the corporate world after multiple promising term sheets fell through amid global uncertainties. For a decade, I was recognized as a top performer in that environment, even achieving significant successes right up to the day before I left. In fact, I had another offer waiting as I stepped away from that role in 2022, a moment that marked my departure from corporate life for good.
Interestingly, my pivot away from the corporate scene had been seeded long before that final decision. I had already begun a hobby business—selling crystals and jewelry—which allowed me to explore creative avenues without the constraints of corporate decorum. Embracing this newfound freedom, I started to build a meaningful connection with people, sharing products and services that brought both of us a genuine sense of well-being. Today, I focus on designing silver jewelry, providing tarot and Oracle readings, and managing two other small ventures.
There were ambitious plans on the horizon, including fundraising for a materials technology company and creating a welcoming space to host Dungeons and Dragons and board game sessions—specifically designed to be inclusive for the LGBTQ+ and women communities. However, life had other plans. As my father’s health declined and his illness became terminal, I chose to center my energy solely on ioCrystals.
This shift has been transformative. I now connect with a community of over 16,000 followers on TikTok and continue to grow my presence on Palmstreet, WhatNot, and Instagram (@iocrystals), while also operating our online store at iocra.shop. Beyond the digital realm, I’ve secured a physical space at the City Business Shipping Center in San Fernando, CA, where I’ve been running private Dungeons and Dragons games. Alongside these creative pursuits, I’m also rebuilding a consulting clientele in the manufacturing sector.
In essence, my story is one of evolving identities and embracing change—with a solid foundation built on hard-earned independence, passion for science and art, and an unwavering commitment to following what truly resonates with me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My life has definitely not been a smooth road—though in many ways, the challenges have been even more defining than the accomplishments.
For most of my life, I’ve wrestled with the tension between external expectations and my own aspirations. Even though I had clarity from a young age about what I wanted—a family early on (check), a PhD (check), to start my own business (check), to work in science in service of the planet and society (check), and to own a shop where I could help others express their authenticity (check)—getting there was often ugly as I cracked through new layers to find deeper authenticity.
The pressure to meet societal norms, the weight of others’ expectations, and my own relentless standards created a constant inner conflict. But over time, I learned to harness that pressure as fuel. It pushed me, sharpened my focus, and helped me build something real.
That said, the hardest part has been navigating relationships—especially romantic ones and close friendships. I’ve often found myself shrinking to make others more comfortable, especially when my ambition, blunt honesty, or even my vulnerability were seen as threats. It took me years to recognize that this dynamic wasn’t about me being “too much,” but about others projecting their discomfort onto me. Once I stopped dimming my light to make others feel safe, everything shifted. I found more clarity, deeper self-respect, and a renewed momentum in both my personal growth and professional life.
So no—it hasn’t been smooth. But every rough patch taught me something about who I am and what I’m capable of. And for that, I’m grateful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
ioCrystals was born from a desire to offer something better—better quality, better energy, and better access—for people seeking tools to support their spiritual growth. What started as a small hobby selling crystals and silver jewelry quickly evolved into something much bigger: a space where people feel seen, inspired, and empowered to explore their own magic.
What sets ioCrystals apart is not just the products—it’s the perspective. With a PhD in inorganic chemistry and a professional background in the very masculine, data-driven world of materials science, I came into the spiritual space as both a skeptic and a seeker. That combination made me a kind of bridge: for people who felt drawn to crystals, tarot, or spellwork but didn’t want to feel “silly” or ungrounded exploring them, my journey gave permission. I had spent decades climbing ladders and leading in science and corporate life—and then pivoted into this magical realm with full conviction. That inspired others, even in the early stages.
Of course, not everyone understood. Some of the people I once felt closest to distanced themselves. But in their place, complete strangers became soul family. People who resonated with the energy of the work showed up—and stayed.
At ioCrystals, we specialize in thoughtfully curated crystals, silver jewelry, accessories, and spiritual tools—but our true offering is empowerment. I want people to reconnect to their own path, beauty, and sense of purpose. Whether someone is new to this world or deep in their practice, I try to make space for authenticity, expression, and growth. And while the aesthetic blends cutesy, vintage, witchy, and whimsical—what makes it truly special is the energy behind it.
My scientific background also allows me to bring a depth and curiosity to crystals that goes beyond surface-level meanings. I’ve been known to nerd out about necrocrystals like Vivianite (which, yes, can grow off corpses), or the molecular structures mixed with metaphysical properties. That’s not something you’ll find everywhere.
Ultimately, my goal is sustainable growth—both in business and in spirit. I’m proud of the community that’s grown around ioCrystals, and of my team and family who have enabled the growth. We’ve also been deeply supported by our customers and followers, and I’m excited to see where we’re headed next.
You can find us at our shop inside City Business Shipping Center in San Fernando, CA or online at iocra.shop and @iocrystals on TikTok, Instagram, WhatNot, and Palmstreet.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that rest isn’t something to feel guilty about.
Early in my journey, I lost my dad—a pivotal and grounding figure in my life—and that grief taught me more than any career milestone ever could. I’ve learned that mourning, resting, and allowing myself space to feel emotionally burned out doesn’t make me weak—it makes me human. Taking naps when I need to, celebrating even the small wins, treating myself with care—these are the moments that make life worth living.
Rest, joy, and stillness are just as essential to growth as hustle and ambition. Whether I’m spending time with those I love or enjoying a moment of solitude, those experiences refill my cup. They remind me why I do this work. They’re what give me the fuel to keep expanding, creating, and showing up for my community.
