Meet Josue Rodriguez of Cypress Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josue Rodriguez.

Hi Josue, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Boxing and sports have always been apart of my life since childhood. My dad was an amateur boxer in Culiacan , Sinaloa Mexico and my mom also played various sports and put me and my brothers in basketball and soccer at the recreation center in the community we grew up in.

Growing up in a neighborhood that was heavy on gangs and violence, playing and being involved in sports kept me out of the streets and out of trouble. It’s all I wanted to do.

Growing up in a low income family and with parents who are immigrants made it challenging for me to find the resources programs and coaches to expand my skills so I had to make up for it by being a self learner
And a hard worker.

After high school I went to college but it didn’t work out for me so I began to coach sports in an after school elementary school program during the same time I began boxing this was where I discovered two of my deep passions boxing and coaching.

Eventually I began to combine both and started coaching people in boxing as a side job at parks and where ever I could.

Now I coach boxing full time for all ages and all levels from beginners to pro level and I’m also continuing to grow in my own boxing career journey now as a professional boxer with 2 fights I am currently training for my third professional boxing fight.

I love what I do both boxing and coaching and I’m grateful to be in a place where I can help the kids in my community by teaching them boxing and discipline through it and at the same time having a program that keeps them busy and off the streets.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been up down and in between and everywhere else you can imagine. From really slow weeks to having no inspiration or motivation , gaining losing fighters and clients to really great busy times , packed with a lot fight events and activities and lot of enthusiasm behind my work and training.

It has been one hell of a rollercoaster but I am glad I stuck it out because it has revealed itself to me to be on of my purposes in life and I’m grateful for it all.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I’ve always been really competitive . Growing up as the older brother of 4 boys. I’ve always wanted to be the best or really good at everything I did so sports and me just clicked.

My parents put me in sports every year as a child year round so that kept me busy. Around home I liked to play outside, ride bikes go running and play with my bothers and friends.
