Hidden Gems: Meet Coby of Compass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coby.

Hi Coby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I believe that finding an incredible home can change one’s life. This ethos has allowed me to utilize my experience on Wall Street and in the design world to assist people in finding the place of their dreams. My perspective on negotiating deals, space and style ensure that all clients and partners get the full service and attention they need while navigating the complex, sophisticated and often deeply personal endeavor of buying or selling a home.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and was born a devoted Oregon Duck fan. Growing up, I was blessed with parents who, while running their art gallery, encouraged me to travel and explore the world. Later, at the University of Oregon, I was able to parlay my love of travel and sports into a basketball scholarship where I managed the basketball team and built relationships with coaches and players alike. I continue to foster my love of sports by coaching youth teams and being an active volunteer in the schools. I, with my fashion designer / executive wife and our four children, call the city of Manhattan Beach home, a South Bay community known for its unique combination of small town feel and beach-luxe lifestyle. Entertaining, spending time with friends, contributing to my local Rotary chapter, and outdoor pursuits keep me in touch with the sense of joie de vivre that defines this coastal community. Cooking with my son Alexander and testing our culinary creations on the family keep me humble, as for better or for worse, our endeavors may land us a spot on “Worst Cooks…”

I hold a M.B.A. from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, as well as a B.A. in Political Science (with honors) from the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. I am also a Fulbright Fellow (Chile 1996-1997).

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You can do everything right and not win. Knowing that doing the correct thing, in a proper and honest manner, has to be enough sometimes. The results will come.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am on my 3rd career 🙂

After 15 years in finance / investment management in Los Angeles and New York, my wife and I founded and ran a premium women’s clothing company for 8 years. When that ended, and the pandemic hit, I switched gears to real estate. I have never been happier. From smaller deals in less glamorous locales, to setting the record for a home sale in Hermosa Beach, the diversity of locations and personalities in an intoxicating mix for global citizen like me 🙂

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Honesty and confidence. By being confident and true to yourself, your family and friends, and your colleagues / clients you will be able to thrive in good and bad times.
