Today we’d like to introduce you to Damn Dad.
Hi Damn Dad, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As an adolescent, I’ve always had an interest and love of music. I would always drag my mom to the local music store to get the latest cassettes of my favorite artists. As I got older, I made music into my hobby, creating music off of my mom’s Compaq computer with a built in microphone and grew to realize it was more of a passion than a hobby. From there, I began making beats in high school, posting on SoundCloud under a different alias to gain more exposure and performing at local gigs in my hometown of Modesto, CA. By senior year, I was picked up by a booking agency and started doing shows right after high school with artists such as Big Sean, YG, G-Eazy, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Bone Thugs n Harmony, T Mills and more.
Due to personal reasons, I took a hiatus from music for a few years and became a father. I decided I wanted to start making music again in 2018 when my daughter showed interest in music, so I dusted off all of my old equipment from storage and started messing around with beats and making music with her.
After sending my new music and beats to a few friends, I was introduced to one of my childhood influences, the band Kottonmouth Kings. It was an honor to be asked to produce the Saint Dog tribute song, Legends Never Die. From there I was asked to join in on writing & production of the 25th anniversary album, 25 to Life and tour with the band as a MC.
I still continued to make my own music separate from Kottonmouth Kings during Covid and ended up scoring collaborations and production credits with major artists such as The Game, GaTa, Young Buck from G-Unit, & Bizarre from D12. With this exposure, I was able to independently release a music video with GaTa for our song “Put a Baby in Her”. Currently, my collaboration track “Bodies” with The Game is at over half a million organic plays and growing day by day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say smooth considering I started off so young and put trust in others to make business decisions for me . Additionally, nothing comes easy to an independent artist because there is no major label funding but I have learned with consistency and determination being independent does pay off.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make dope music with some dope beats with some dope people! haha. I’m most proud of the fact that everything I make is all me, from song writing to production to mixing & mastering. It’s rare that everything is done in house by 1 person. Shout out to Ye!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I get asked this question a lot and I stick by this. I started off on a free music editor called Audacity. I was all self taught prior to the birth of YouTube in 05′. YouTube has played a major role in advancing my music to the next level, It has everything you need to know.
