Conversations with Riccardo Malpeli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riccardo Malpeli.

Hi Riccardo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Parma, Italy—a small city with a big cultural heart. I grew up surrounded by music, food, and art, but I never quite felt like I fit into the traditional mold. I picked up the bass guitar as a teenager and quickly fell in love with the instrument—not just for how it sounded, but for how it let me express everything I couldn’t put into words.

Eventually, I left Italy to pursue music seriously, studying at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles and later ICON Collective. Since moving to LA, I’ve been part of multiple bands, played some iconic venues like the Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy, and collaborated with talented artists across genres—from electronic to alternative rock. My music journey hasn’t been linear, but it’s been full of heart.

I’m not just a bassist or a producer—I’m a connector. I love bringing people together, helping others get shows, find collaborators, or grow as artists. It’s part of who I am. Right now, I’m focused on building something long-term, both in music and in life, while staying true to my roots and my values.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my biggest challenges has been navigating the U.S. immigration system as an international artist. Balancing legal requirements, financial pressure, and an unpredictable industry while staying creative has been exhausting at times. I’ve also had to deal with unprofessional or toxic people along the way, which made it harder to stay focused. But despite all of it, I’ve stayed consistent, kept building, and found strength in the people and projects that truly matter.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a bassist, music producer, and live performer based in Los Angeles. I specialize in blending genres—alternative rock, electronic, and pop—and I’m known for my raw energy on stage and my deep sense of musical connection. Whether I’m playing sold-out shows at legendary venues like Whisky a Go Go or working behind the scenes in the studio, I bring the same passion and attention to detail.

What sets me apart is my versatility. I don’t just play bass—I help shape the creative direction of the projects I’m involved in. I’ve worked with artists from different backgrounds and styles, and I thrive when I’m connecting people, whether it’s helping someone find a producer or putting together a full band for a show. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come since moving from Italy—I’ve built a name for myself here not just through talent, but through hustle, integrity, and genuine love for the craft.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is staying authentic—to myself, to my art, and to the people I care about. In an industry full of image and noise, I’ve learned that the most powerful thing you can offer is honesty—musically, emotionally, and personally. I care deeply about connection, and I believe that creating something real—whether it’s a song, a moment on stage, or a conversation—can make someone feel less alone. That’s why I do what I do. It’s not just about being seen—it’s about making others feel seen too.
