Daily Inspiration: Meet Dorothy Lucey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothy Lucey.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been a (smart ass) TV personality, a podcaster, a philanthropist, a Professor and a paddle-boarder. It all started in a muddy field. When reporting news on TV we say we’re out in the field. But I was literally out in a field for my first TV live shot. I did the walk and talk. And stepped out of my shoe (damn mud). I was already shaking like a flamingo before balancing on one foot. That was in Scranton PA. I’ve been a reporter in NY and LA, hosted reality and talk shows. I’ve worked at ABC, NBC, CBS & FOX. Done everything on TV but weather. Was (briefly) a sports reporter until they realized I knew nothing about sports.

Hosting Good Day LA was the perfect mom job. I made it to every field trip, usually in TV makeup, and inappropriate shoes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I call getting fired the gift wrapped in shit. The 3 of us, Steve Edwards, Jillian Barberie and I co-hosted Good Day LA for 2 decades. We adored or tolerated each other, depending on the day. We got to interview every celebrity you can name & then some. When it ended (after sulking a bit) I realized there was more to life than talking about Kim & Khloé on TV. I got to drive my son to school, and I volunteered on 6 missions on 3 continents with a charity called Mending Kids. I learned much of the world is BYOTP (bring your own toilet paper). Charity became my (second) drug of choice. I mean, I still like wine. But I wanted to be Mother Teresa (a somewhat hot Mother Teresa with Botox & Salmon Sperm). I lost a great job. And started working on having a great

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an adjunct Professor of Broadcast Journalism, a podcaster, a board member of Mending Kids and an occasional travel blogger. But most people know me from my 30 years on TV.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Three hours of live TV a day was a high wire act. But putting yourself out there, even on an Instagram story can feel like a risk.

I’ve taken many risks in my life and career. I’ve been fired 10 times from 10 different TV shows. But…I’ve also been married for 30 years. And have a son & daughter-in-law that I love.

I say to my son, and to my students, go save the world! I mean save it in little ways. Save it with your talents and with your kindness. The biggest risk is not taking a risk. Or possibly diving with sharks, which I did for a story.
