Check Out Jana Groller’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana Groller.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I never had much interest in cooking or baking. But I’ve always been artistic.
I was a nanny in my youth in Beverly Hills and was just kind of going where the wind blew me.
In 2009 I started planning a surprise party for a good friend. As I’m delegating jobs- I nonchalantly gave myself the task of making his birthday cake. He is a musician so naturally I decided that I could make a cake in the shape of a guitar. I had never carved or worked with fondant before.
But I did it, and it was awesome.
From that day on- I started to get orders. First from friends….then friends of friends. And with each cake, I learned. I failed a lot. A LOT!! But just kept learning and getting better.
I found that the artistry in cake decorating really spoke to my soul. I was free to express a part of me I never really had before. And the feedback was so encouraging.
I eventually got an instagram and a website and my business just kept growing and growing. Much of my clientele today is referral or repeat customers.
I really developed a knack for hyper realistic cakes. Much like my first guitar cake. I’ve made burgers, subway sandwiches and stacks of pancakes,…lizards and cockroaches. Vans shoes and Coach purses.
They are by far my favorite to do! I love the challenge and enjoy every moment of the process. Even the moments I doubt myself.
Though I truly love making all types of cakes for every occasion. I am so honored to be a part of people’s celebrations. I can’t think of anything I’d be wanting to do more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an artist and a single mom is pretty tough at times. Not just the urge to provide a steady income- which can be difficult when you are self employed and there is a lot of competition. But there are also long hours and nights working away into the early morning. I miss out on things with them sometimes- but I know they see how hard I work. And I know it is teaching them an incredibly valuable lesson. In tenacity. In working for yourself. In hustling.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in two things that sets me apart from others…
One I mentioned earlier…
Hyper realistic cakes. Like the ones you see on tv. The crazier the better for me! I truly love the challenge of manipulating buttercream and fondant and other materials to trick the eye… to make one thing look like another. Particularly food. I don’t know why it is so delightful to see a giant plate of pasta with all the little details…just to cut into a yummy slice of chocolate cake.
The other thing I do that sets me apart is birthday parties.
I offer cake decorating birthday parties and they are my favorite to do!
It’s a truly unique kid party experience and different from all the bounce house play place situations that are the general offer these days.
I customize a cake design to whatever the theme of the party is.
I then bring an example cake and a cake for each kid in a box for them to take home. They each get a bag of supplies and then I stay and teach for an hour, step by step. And the kids absolutely love it!
I do also offer adult classes- typically for a moms night in type of thing and that’s called Cakes & Cocktails and they get pretty fun!
As a naturally introverted, somewhat shy person, I have surprised myself by being such a natural with entertaining a group and I am in my element and love sharing that experience with people and teaching others to love what I love doing!

What does success mean to you?
I don’t think I’ve reached a level of success that can be quantified.
I do dream of something exploding. I dream of my cake birthday parties getting huge and popular and growing and expanding…. And that could look like success to me.
For now- my success is in being able to provide for my children and myself as a mom doing it all on my own. Of making something from nothing and using my passion and my art to provide. I’m very proud of that.
