Meet Eve Wood of evewood.net in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eve Wood.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began making art when I was eleven years old. I started out as a filmmaker and got accepted to Cal Arts in film, but soon transferred to visual art. Upon graduating from Cal Arts, I went on to UC Irvine and got a degree in creative writing. From there, I began showing my artwork in and around Los Angeles. My first solo show was at Miller/Durazo Gallery and then I went on to show at Susanne Vielmetter and Western Project for six years. My artwork and writing has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Tema Celeste, The New Republic. The Nation, Artillery Magazine, Art and Cake and many more.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely NOT smooth going. I tell all my students that if you sleep/eat/breathe/dream art, then that means you MUST make it and that there is no other option. If there is any other option, take it!!! Art is a hard, painful and lonely road, however, a bred-in-the-bones artist makes art no matter what. My greatest challenge has been how to generate a living wage while still making good work. it’s a hard balance, and I never have been able to take a full time, “honest” job, punching a clock, because I always feel frustrated that I cannot make my own work. It takes time and tremendous psychic energy to make art, and there is no cutting corners.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I also have a writing business. I’ve ghostwritten volumes of poems for clients, memoirs, children’s books and more. I also write art criticism for various magazines. I specialize in ANY kind of writing with a creative bent, a flare for the dramatic. As a visual artist, I am most known for my drawings of animals. I am most proud of my creativity. What sets me apart is a unique and uncompromising vision of the world.

What were you like growing up?
I am pretty much the same as I was when I was ten years old — hanging out with all manner of beasts including horses, dogs, birds, etc. and making art. I was very independent as a child, but also very sensitive. My father tells a story about me when I was two years old, sitting alone in the middle of the living room floor. He put on some very sad piece of music — perhaps Barber’s Adagio For Strings, and said that I burst into tears, and was virtually unconsolable.
