Life & Work with David Weisberg of Canoga Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Weisberg.

Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a young teenager, I always felt the need to be of service to others. I would mow lawns, wash cars, paint things and offer coffee to drivers in line at the gas station during the 70s gas crises. My first professional paying job was at the local Butcher & Deli shops in the San Fernando Valley where I learned how to take and execute direct orders from a manager. I enjoyed having a task to complete and I always did my best. I ended up getting a job in 1985 at Cavarettas Italian Deli in Canoga Park and worked tirelessly for 10 years. My next job was my first managerial position at with a catering company/gourmet meat market called Greet Acres Farm Market in Simi Valley. Then in January 2000 I received the opportunity to become a partner back at Cavarettas Italian Deli. My old boss had become my new partner and we will be celebrating 25 years together this summer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a business always comes with seen and unseen challenges as I have experienced many beginning with how I was to balance my new bounty of responsibilities with my home life of raising three children ages 6, 4 & 6 months and also being married for 10 years. 6 years of 60+ hour work weeks and stressful economic struggles I was handed divorce papers and was given %50 child custody which to this day has been the saddest thing I’ve have delt with.. Also while dealing with all the effects that the Corona Virus brought to running a small business, I was diagnosed with Chrones disease and a small skin cancer spot on my back. I do deal with some anxiety and depression but I have built up a good mental outlook on life which gives me strength to persevere through all things.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My daily tasks include the preparation of our most popular menu items like our homemade lasagna and Italian extra large Meatballs. Then ordering of any necessary products and paying vendors and then helping customers and then helping with closing procedures.
I think of myself as being more of a creator of being conscious in your surroundings. All tasks are done with appreciation and gratitude and I try and make the environment around me more enjoyable. I’d like to think that kindness and the willingness to give of myself in all situations is what I’m most proud of.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite memory as a kid was watching those once a year movies on TV, especially Chitty Chittty Bang Bang because I really enjoyed how Dick Van Dyke’s character really tried to make everyone happy with his inventions and Sweets.
