Rising Stars: Meet Hailey Canterbury of Temecula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Canterbury.

Hailey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For as long as I can remember, I was always passionate about anything creative or artistic. As a child, I would watch “The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross” on PBS and was always crafting with anything I could get my hands on.
Art was a form of self-expression and an outlet for creativity; to get into the zone. I was a little shy when I was younger, and this made me feel less alone.
I would say my biggest inspiration is Vincent van Gogh because he created so passionately despite struggling with mental illness and social rejection. The fact that his work was only recognized after his passing really stuck with me – artwork and popularity are truly subjective.
In high school, I took ceramics, but when I was in college, I took a few drawing and painting classes. The professor told me I had a unique artistic style and to not take any more classes, because my art style may get to technical or conformed. From there, I mainly focused on paintings of various mediums including oil, acrylic, and occasionally watercolors.
These days, I create art in my free time and have been experimenting with sharing it on different social media platforms. I mainly make art to reflect the beauty of mundane, everyday life and it sometimes leans towards the trippy or spiritual side. To me, art is a form of creativity, self-expression, and judgement-free healing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the art world can be tricky to navigate. Sometimes galleries or exhibits have application fees to just be displayed, and it can be daunting to put yourself out there. Since art is subjective, it can be discouraging to have one’s work rejected. I learned to not seek validation in creating art, even from myself. To let go of perfectionism and to just create. Some of my most popular pieces were ones I did not put so much effort or thought into.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a freelance artist and I share the art I create in my free time and occasionally take art inquires. I make custom pieces and sell locally.
I specifically love creative art spaces and working on oil and acrylic paintings. I do not have a specific genre or technique, i believe my art work is ever changing and evolving with me.
I mainly get inquires for individuals to celebrate lifes special moments which I am honored to be apart of. This includes people requesting paintings of their pets or loved ones and gifts for special occasions.
One of my mail goals is to have my artwork displayed in galleries and exhibits.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I find inspiration in everyday life; the simple and mundane things that get blurred into the background. I use art as a form of gratitude, that we are able to experience and share the human condition. It is a way to process my thoughts and experiences that I may not fully understand, like why sometimes we experience bad things and how to express it.
I was inspired by the book “Art Before Breakfast” by Danny Gregory that encourages others to create art out of anything that comes to mind, or what is right in front of us. I like watching others create, whether it is on social media or the classics like Bob Ross. I also enjoy visiting art galleries and museums for inspiration. I am truly inspired by exploring various forms of art, like modeling/ photography, dance genres, and new creative experiences as that contributes to my work.

Pricing:

  • Pricing is based on the medium of the art work and the cost of the materials used. Then including the time it takes to create my work. Right now, my art is priced around $50-$500.
