Today we’d like to introduce you to Kapris Aguirre.
Hi Kapris, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey with movement began around age 6 when I joined cheerleading. Even though I only did it for one season, it sparked something in me. I’ve always loved music and dancing — I would watch TikToks and dance shows and spend hours learning the moves and recording myself. When I was 13, I joined a recreational hip-hop class at a dance studio, and I instantly fell in love with the groove and the energy.
The next season, I auditioned for the competition team. That year was a huge learning experience — I gained a deeper understanding of teamwork, trust, and what it really means to work hard. This past season was especially important for me. I got my very first solo, and I was determined to give it my all. With the constant support of my parents, who made sure I had the best training and made it to every private lesson, and with the incredible guidance of Sam Donahue, who believed in me and poured into my passion, I was able to accomplish something big. I won first place and placed overall at all three competitions I attended. It was a dream come true.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges was learning who truly supports me and wants to see me succeed. This past year was a rollercoaster — my first solo came with a lot of new emotions, responsibilities, and pressure. And the year before, I suffered a concussion after a fall during a stunt on stage, which was really tough physically and mentally. But every challenge has made me stronger and more grateful for the journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a dancer who specializes in hip-hop, and I’m known for my energy, stage presence, and passion when I perform.
What sets me apart is my dedication to constantly improving and staying true to who I am. I’m not afraid to be bold, try new styles, or express real emotion on stage. I also bring a creative spark — whether it’s remixing music, choreographing, or coming up with fun ways to connect with an audience. Every challenge has fueled my fire. Dance isn’t just something I do — it’s who I am.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was definitely the outgoing, life-of-the-party type. I was always singing, dancing, and creating something. One year, I was obsessed with being a DJ — I asked for a DJ set and spent the whole summer teaching myself how to mix music and write songs. My siblings and I would put on full productions with scripts, music, and acting. We even started a YouTube channel.
I’ve always loved musicals — I watched The Wizard of Oz every single day. Music has always been in me, and no matter what I’m doing, it somehow always leads back to music and performance. I really believe I was born for this.
