Conversations with Kimbra Westervelt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimbra Westervelt

Hi Kimbra , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Los Angeles, but after I turned ten, we moved to Orange County. I had an eclectic upbringing, shaped by contrasting parental influences. My mother, a naturalized American from Taiwan with an exceptional work ethic, strongly believed in the American dream which meant more of a traditional career trajectory through business and education. In contrast, my father was an iconoclast with an artist’s heart, who never pursued the arts professionally. He became a business owner and passed away from a brain tumor at a young age. His closest friends were actors and teachers, and he surrounded himself with creative types. My grandmother, an opera singer, shared stories of her performing days, teaching me valuable lessons about following one’s passion, as she had given up her career to marry young.

It was my father who encouraged my artistic side, nurturing my love for music and acting. Although I initially struggled to fully embrace the arts, my creative journey eventually led me to fully accept my creative side. As a teenager, I attended The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, lived in Europe, and experienced a variety of life adventures that further shaped my artistic identity. Discovering my singing ability at age seven, music has always been a part of my life. I’ve toured Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa with various musical groups, performing songs featured in movies and on television.

These experiences have made me who I am today. I feel that I am living the life I was meant to live—continually creating music, working in the entertainment industry through acting and voiceover work, and constantly educating myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I’m not working on creative projects or performing, I work as an educator. I enjoy passing on the knowledge I’ve acquired to others. I also started a podcast called Candid With Kimbra. Podcasts have become a bridge to connect people everywhere, encompassing entertainment, business, social listening, and learning from those with interesting perspectives. Some topics we might never have considered until someone piques our interest with their words. I know many talented and successful individuals, whether they are filmmakers, musicians, or authors. Many of my guests are independent artists who have mastered the art of creating projects with limited resources and bringing them to fruition.

The entertainment industry today is very much DIY, which can be quite daunting. I aim to share what I know and what my guests know with a broad audience who loves to listen, learn, and enjoy. My main goal is to be both entertaining and educational.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
