Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayla Casey
Hi Ayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Los Angeles has always been a city of reinvention, and my story is no different. I’m a writer, mental health coach, and end-of-life doula, weaving together storytelling, somatic work, and advocacy to help people process the complexities inherent in our personal and collective lives, reclaim empowering narratives, and transform their lives.
For years, I worked in media and storytelling, crafting narratives for brands and organizations. But the most profound chapter of my life began when I became a caregiver for my late husband, James, as he faced terminal cancer. That experience reshaped everything I thought I knew about love, presence, and healing. I learned how to sit with both the immense pain and joy our bond produced, rather than numbing or suppressing it. In losing him, I discovered that our stories—how we hold them, process them, and rewrite them—are integral to our ability to heal.
That understanding led me to create Alchemy for Human Hearts, an offering under my personal brand that explores healing through storytelling, community, somatic practices, and deep self-inquiry. My work is about transformation—facing life’s most difficult moments with grace, holding space for joy and gratitude, and integrating it all into something meaningful and expansive.
At the same time, I’ve continued health advocacy work, which began during James’ battle with colorectal cancer and has since become a central focus of my mission. I have partnered with major advocacy organizations, artists, and communities to raise funds and awareness through media campaigns, auctions, and public education efforts. My work extends beyond storytelling into tangible action—ensuring that colorectal cancer awareness, prevention, and access to screenings reach the communities that need them most.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Transformation is never a straight path. My biggest challenge has been learning to trust my own intuition and inner wisdom, especially in a world that often disconnects us from ourselves. Early in my career, I leaned heavily on external validation—overworking, overcommitting, and numbing through substance use as a way to cope.
Then, grief cracked me open. Losing James forced me to sit with the rawness of life, without distractions. I had to rebuild from the ground up, learning to trust my body, emotions, and intuition as guides. That journey led to a dramatic perspective shift—the degree to which I care for myself is a direct correlation to the degree to which I can care for others. This realization deepened my commitment to self-advocacy, gut health, and somatic healing, which are now core to my work.
Another challenge has been bridging my public health advocacy with the deeply personal nature of grief and healing. James and I fought for greater awareness and access to colorectal cancer screenings, and I’ve continued that mission. The challenge has been balancing the public fight for awareness with the private process of grieving and healing—learning how to honor both without diminishing either.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At its core, my work is about helping people integrate the ups and downs of life experiences so they can move forward with clarity, purpose, and self-trust.
Alchemy for Human Hearts – My signature offering, which includes mentorship, somatic healing, storytelling, and self-inquiry practices to help individuals process grief, transitions, and emotional blocks.
Advocacy & Health Equity – I serve as the Co-Chair of the Health Equity Committee for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, where I work to increase access to screening resources and advocate for communities disproportionately affected by colorectal cancer. James was diagnosed young, and I am deeply committed to eradicating this preventable disease through awareness, education, and direct action.
Storytelling and Writing – Storytelling remains at the heart of everything I do. I’m currently writing my memoir about love, loss, and transformation. I also create essays, guided meditations, and thought leadership pieces to share the insights I’ve gained.
Public Speaking & Awareness – I speak on topics ranging from mental health and grief to colorectal cancer awareness and advocacy. Whether through workshops, speaking engagements, or online content, my goal is to educate and empower.
Gut Health & Holistic Well-being – My focus on gut health stems from both mental health science and cancer awareness. Gut health is central to emotional well-being, immune function, and disease prevention. I advocate for a holistic approach to health that empowers individuals to take control of their bodies and longevity.
Whether through 1:1 mentorship, writing, advocacy, or speaking, my mission is to guide others toward self-trust, emotional integration, and a deeper connection to their own story and health.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
A big part of my message is that healing is both personal and collective. We’re not meant to go through grief, transformation, or self-discovery alone. My work is about building bridges—between mind and body, science and intuition, and personal healing and collective change.
I am deeply committed to eradicating colorectal cancer through awareness, screening accessibility, and health equity efforts, while also advocating for mental and emotional well-being through storytelling, somatic work, and self-advocacy.
Los Angeles is a city of dreamers, artists, and seekers, and I’m honored to be part of a creative landscape that values depth, reinvention, and connection.
My invitation is this: Trust your story. Trust your body. Trust your intuition. Healing isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about integrating it into a future that feels whole.
