Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Bankhead
Hi Richard, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my career as a board engineer at Accelerated Radio, an online radio station founded by veteran broadcaster Kevin Nash, a longtime on-air personality at KJLH with over 25 years of experience in the industry. I connected with Kevin Nash through the Broadcasters Mentoring Group, an online educational program that pairs aspiring radio professionals with experienced industry veterans for hands-on training and mentorship.
Through this program, I had the opportunity to work with Nash’s team of engineers, where I gained valuable experience in board operation and radio show production. As Accelerated Radio expanded, additional on-air slots became available, and Kevin Nash and his team offered me a one-hour time slot to host my own show. This opportunity led to the creation of Str8OutDaTrunk Radio in 2014.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing in life comes easy, and anything truly worth having requires perseverance. My journey in the entertainment industry—specifically in radio and podcasting—has been filled with both highs and lows. Challenges are inevitable, and for me, some of the earliest struggles included earning respect from my peers, gaining credibility with talent, and dealing with constant rejection—whether it was hearing “no” repeatedly or being ignored altogether.
However, those obstacles only fueled my determination. They pushed me to work harder for myself, my brand, and my company. They motivated me to show up at every event, conduct thorough research, and make meaningful connections by engaging directly with people, looking them in the eye, and ensuring my presence was known.
Another crucial lesson I’ve learned along this journey is that it takes money to make money—no matter the industry. Additionally, relationship-building is essential. Establishing strong connections, leveraging them to create new opportunities, and maintaining those relationships over time are key to long-term success.

Richard Bankhead is the owner of Str8OutDaTrunk Radio, a platform dedicated to highlighting artists, brands, and entrepreneurs through in-depth interviews about their music, businesses, and lifestyles. In addition to hosting and producing shows, he is a skilled radio board engineer and show producer, ensuring high-quality broadcasts.
Beyond radio, Richard plays a key role in artist development, assisting with rollout strategies, press runs, and industry connections. His ability to make sound decisions under pressure has made him a valuable asset in the entertainment industry. He also covers events, providing professional photography and recap videos to enhance brand visibility.
Passionate about education and community impact, Richard teaches podcasting to students in the Inglewood School District with his Mentor Kevin Nash. Looking ahead, he aims to expand this program to serve students within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), equipping the next generation with media and storytelling skills.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me is showing up for myself every day—ensuring that I am mentally, physically, and spiritually aligned. I’m deeply committed to self-improvement and constantly striving to become the best version of myself.
Equally important are the relationships I build with my peers, friends, and family. I believe in surrounding myself with like-minded individuals—people who are either on the same path as me or striving to go even further.
Teamwork and passion are also essential to me. I believe in doing what you love, having fun while doing it, and not settling for a life dictated by someone else’s dissatisfaction.
Respect and visibility matter as well. I want to be recognized in the right rooms by the right people—not just for what I do, but for the value I bring.
