Today we’d like to introduce you to Liso Lee
Hi Liso, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello! Thank you for having me. I was born and raised in Korea, and I’ve loved music since my childhood. I first picked up the guitar and was immediately captivated by its charm. At first, it was just about enjoying music, but as time passed, I became certain that this path would be the direction of my life. In 2012, I moved to the United States because I wanted to perform my music on a bigger stage. Through my experiences here, I’ve collaborated with various artists, and they’ve had a significant influence on my musical growth.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My musical journey has always been full of challenges, but those challenges have helped me grow and become stronger. When I moved from Korea to the United States in 2012, adapting to a new environment and culture was certainly not easy. However, through that process, I was able to meet diverse people, gain new experiences, and broaden my perspective on music. The music industry in the U.S. is vast and complex, but within it, I have been able to continuously strive to find my own place and grow.
Additionally, collaborating with various artists has allowed me to learn new styles and musical approaches, which has played a crucial role in shaping my own unique sound. Working with artists like Gwen Stefani,Ceelo Green,Zayn Malik, Willow Smith, and Fifth Harmony has been incredibly inspiring, and through these experiences, I gained confidence on stage.
All these challenges have provided me with valuable learning opportunities, and each time I faced a new challenge, I found a chance to grow musically, taking one step further toward my artistic development
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In 2014, I was chosen as Ceelo Green’s guitarist for my first tour, which was opening for Lionel Richie. Working with Ceelo was a pivotal turning point in my musical journey. I had been a long-time fan of his and loved his musical sense, so every time I worked with him, I learned how to express emotions more deeply through my playing.
Currently, I am working as the guitarist for Gwen Stefani. When I first started playing guitar at concerts, the first song I ever played was “Don’t Speak,” so when I received the audition offer, it didn’t feel real at first. I joined her Las Vegas “Just a Girl” residency in 2018, and it was truly a special experience. She has such a strong presence on stage, and working with her has been incredibly inspiring in terms of energy and style.
I am also currently the guitarist for Willow Smith. Working with Willow has allowed me to explore a whole new level of creativity. She is not only passionate about music but also has a very free and innovative mindset toward art in general. Working with her has opened up new musical territories for me. Her music is very emotional and experimental, which has given me the opportunity to try new techniques and styles as a guitarist.
Recently, I released my solo single “Atlas,” with Jimmy Johnson on bass. I’ve been a huge fan of his, so working with him was a healing experience for me throughout the whole process. “Atlas” represents my personal journey. It’s based on the emotions and experiences I’ve gone through. The song reflects the various burdens I’ve carried in my life, but it’s also about how I’ve found myself and discovered the direction I need to move forward. I wanted to convey the message of self-discovery and growth through the weight I’ve carried, and this song represents that internal transformation.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
As a session guitarist, there are several essential qualities that I believe are key to success. First, technical proficiency is crucial. The ability to play a variety of styles and master difficult pieces is fundamental. Creativity is equally important, as it allows me to bring new ideas to my playing and add a unique flavor to the music. Collaboration skills are also essential. Working with different artists requires effective communication and teamwork.
Stage presence is another important quality. Being able to connect with the audience and bring energy to the performance is key. Persistence and dedication are necessary as well. Continuous practice and self-improvement are essential for growth. Musical sensitivity, or the ability to express emotion through music, is also vital. Finally, adaptability is important for adjusting to different genres and performance environments.
These qualities combined help me grow as a musician and contribute meaningfully to any project I’m a part of.
