Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Odermatt
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was quite young when my parents gifted me a small piano keyboard. It allowed me to experiment with a wide range of sounds, and I would record and layer them on top of each other using a tape recorder. I suppose I’ve always had an intuitive understanding of sound. I’ve always been captivated by the way specific music, melodies, and harmonies can evoke emotions in us. Emotions that were previously absent or simply overlooked emerge.
Music always proves to be an invaluable tool in releasing tension and providing solace during challenging times. I was fortunate enough to study classical piano for eight years with a private tutor from the age of six. However, focusing solely on reproducing compositions on the piano felt too restrictive for me. I’ve never found the music I connect with in music books. Instead, I discover it in life itself. Music is an integral part of our environment and encompasses the sounds we produce through our physical presence in the space and the interactions we share with others. Film music is particularly remarkable in highlighting stories we tell. Many stories would be incomplete without music. Music is enhancing their emotional impact and capturing our attention.
As a pianist, I’ve always cherished the moment when I close my eyes and tune into my senses while allowing my perception to guide my playing. I’ve come to understand that my perception is highly influenced by my surroundings, the people present, and their moods. I’ve also discovered that I can identify and express my own and others’ emotions through music, which helps balance them out. All of this happens while I’m playing the piano. This skill proved invaluable when there are tense energies present in the environment.
Growing up, some of the melodies I played lingered in my mind, inspiring me to incorporate them into my compositions and recordings, particularly during my experimental performances with other musicians. I’ve always believed in the positive impact of music, which is why my music always had lyrical and harmonic depth, and an uplifting spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed creating playlists for myself and others and blending music together.
I experienced a few magical encounters with other musicians with whom I could “download” and create incredible songs. However, my journey always continued regardless of these meaningful relationships.
Nevertheless, throughout my journey, I never considered myself a solo pianist. I always associated my music with a female voice, and I was determined to find it. When I met Saskia in July 2012, I had finally found my voice. I’ve always been mesmerized by the music that comes through me when she sings. We’ve embarked on an incredible journey together—“Dust of Soul”—for nearly 13 years now.
These days, we channel music almost every day, whether it’s for private sessions or group events. It feels like there’s just one channel we express ourselves through musically. I cherish every moment of this musical connection.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The most significant challenge for me has been to remain authentic to myself. In my life, I’ve been overwhelmed by numerous labels and definitions imposed upon me by external sources, which I refer to as “influencing frequencies”. Some of them were so compelling that I couldn’t let go and wanted to align with them, even though their energy didn’t benefit my well-being. Looking back, I realize that those experiences are a part of my journey and have helped me grow by learning life’s lessons.
Let me share an example with you: Playing the piano spontaneously and in the moment has always resonated with me the most. However, my environment instilled in me the habit of studying music and practicing diligently. To hold on, focus, and maintain control. There is indeed a strict discipline involved in acquiring the skills of playing an instrument. However, I have been most connected to the piano when it seemed to play me.
I discovered that tuning into the present moment offers a distinct approach to music, complementing the mastery of performing renowned compositions. So, I grew up in both worlds equally, despite their vastly different cultures. The challenge was to merge these two worlds to a point where the piano became an integral part of me, allowing me to simply “let go.”
I’ve always felt an intense connection with the piano, as if it were an “natural extension” of my being. However, I’ve never comprehended the process of how I could overcome the challenge of integrating a potentially 600-pound Grand Piano into my very being. Furthermore, I have an innate heightened sensitivity to sound, which I express through my senses. There’s always this notion of the desired outcome sound, and I make an effort to manifest it precisely to effectively convey the message of the music I perceive. This posed several challenges because I’ve always played on different pianos and each instrument has its own unique sound.
I had already been a touring musician in my teenage years, when I performed in live bands and as the pianist in a renowned gospel choir. I often found it a challenge to “describe” the sound and message I receive to my peers. They also didn’t respond with the same urgency or necessity to “make it happen,” which was really frustrating at times.
So in the beginning of 2011, I official quit on music while knowing that my destiny will show itself within the next half a year. And it did: Saskia was introduced to me, the singer who invited me onto the journey that would eventually become “Dust of Soul”.
We had an understanding with each other about music that is literally beyond written music. Finally, I feel at the right place as a Piano Medium alongside the Singing Psychic Medium, Saskia. Together, we channel the soul’s harmonic frequencies into songs called “Soul Songs.” We use music as a tool to enhance people’s lives.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Piano Medium, which means I use the piano to express the emotions and messages I receive when I tune in. In general, musicians often act as channels as they are receiving frequencies from their “sources”—some commonly referred to as “muses”—that they encode and translate into music.
However, as a Piano Medium, I specifically tune into energy fields. In this trained act of entering a different state and shutting off the analytical, observing mind, I act as the bridge, as one who translates and transcodes, if you will. With the Singing Psychic Medium Saskia, we channel vocal melodies and piano music into a song that carries psychic messages in its lyrics. This “Soul Song” can be about anything. Anything can come through in a Soul Song. This has absolutely nothing to do with the music sounding pleasant. Only you, as the “receiver” of the Soul Song, resonate with it on a profound level that evokes deep emotions within you. We both offer psychic readings, including mediumship, after the musical Soul Song expression to share our insights. We also explore resonating chakras in the music, as each sound corresponds to an energy center within our body.
Channeling music offers an unparalleled experience, because each session is entirely unique and one-of-a-kind. We always provide recordings of our sessions to allow you to carry your Soul Song with you on your journey and revisit it to realign with your frequency. Each time you listen to it, you delve deeper and gain more insights into yourself and your next steps. At some point, you might need another Soul Song, and eventually, you’ll be creating a Soul Song Album with us. We frequently offer “Soul Song Journeys,” a safe space for the group to support you on your journey. Here, you can interact and share with one another and we channel the unified energy field of the group into a group Soul Song. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to accompany so many extraordinary Soul Song journeys with such powerful souls.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
From my personal experiences, I’ve come to realize that every interaction you have can be seen as a “mentorship”. In every relationship, you find a teacher, and simultaneously, you become a teacher to the other person. As a result, I’m fully aware of every connection I make and am eager to learn and grow through it. I primarily rely on my intuition, but I always make an effort to be open to new perspectives because I strongly believe that everything happens for me, never against me. There’s always something valuable to be found in seemingly insignificant things. Looking back, I’ve made the most significant discoveries by paying close attention to the “unimportant stuff”.
