Today we’d like to introduce you to Rabbi Levi Begun
Hi Rabbi Levi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
When my wife Rochy and I moved to the West Coast in 2017, we had a vision but very little else—just a passion for connecting people and a desire to build a Jewish community. We didn’t have a building or funding, but we believed Culver City needed a place for Jewish life to thrive.
My desire to serve the community was shaped by my parents’ dedication to building their community in Cheviot Hills, CA, and further inspired by my grandfather, who serves as the Head Rabbi of Chabad West Coast—one of the largest networks of religious organizations and the most dynamic force in Jewish life in the world. More than anything, I was deeply inspired by the teachings and leadership of the Chabad Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, whose unwavering commitment to strengthening Jewish life around the world motivated me to take action. The Rebbe taught that no Jew should ever feel alone and that every place—no matter how big or small—deserves a strong, welcoming Jewish presence.
Culver City stood out as a place where a vibrant Jewish community could thrive, and we saw an opportunity to establish a center that would offer meaningful programs, outreach, and events to bring people together.
We started hosting Shabbat dinners and holiday events in our small space, inviting anyone who was interested. Word spread, and slowly, more individuals and families joined us. Some were looking for a deeper Jewish connection; others were new to the area and searching for community. We met people at the local farmers market, at their homes, and even on the street, always extending a warm invitation.
Over time, our gatherings outgrew our small space. We started renting venues for High Holiday services and major events, always keeping an open-door policy. The support of our growing community enabled us to expand our programming—offering Hebrew school, mommy & me, women’s events, social events, and holiday celebrations that brought hundreds together.
It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re so thankful to see the community thriving. Chabad of Culver City has become a place where people connect and support each other. It’s not just a community, but a family, and we’re excited to see it continue to grow.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building a community from the ground up is no small task. It takes vision, dedication, and the resources to bring that vision to life—most importantly, financial support. Unlike large organizations with established backing, our support comes entirely from within the community—people who believe in this mission and step up with passion and generosity to make a real impact.
From finding a suitable space for events to ensuring that there are enough seats and food, the details of running a community can be overwhelming. Creating a space where everyone feels at home, regardless of their level of observance or prior Jewish experience, takes patience, understanding, and commitment.
Whether it’s a community event, a holiday celebration, a Torah class, or a Shabbat meal, one step leads to the next, and every bit of progress lays the groundwork for something greater. It’s an ongoing journey, built through dedication and persistence.
In today’s fast-paced world, many are searching for meaning, yet hesitant to commit. Creating an environment where people feel welcome, valued, and inspired takes continuous effort and a deep understanding of what speaks to them.
But it’s more than just organizing events—it’s being there for people in their moments of joy and sorrow, answering questions, offering guidance, and ensuring no one feels alone. The work is deeply fulfilling but also demanding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Celebrating Jewish heritage is an essential part of our organization’s identity, but our primary mission is to bring joy and connection to people’s lives through our outreach and services.
What sets us apart is our open-door policy—whether someone needs spiritual guidance, a hospital visit, a place to celebrate Shabbat, a warm meal delivered to their door, or just a listening ear, we are always here. We don’t have membership fees like many other organizations. We take pride in our ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where people can connect with their heritage in a way that feels personal and inspiring.
We are known for hosting impactful community events, from our grand Menorah Lightings across Culver City during Hanukkah to festive holiday celebrations, fun kids events, and engaging Torah classes and Shabbat services. Beyond religious gatherings, we also offer social events like singles nights, painting workshops, and baking sessions, making Jewish life accessible and meaningful for all.
At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to spreading kindness, unity, and Jewish pride. Our mission is to uplift and strengthen the community, ensuring that everyone in Culver City feels supported, connected, and valued.
What does success mean to you?
By the impact we make in people’s lives. If even one person’s life is enriched because of what we do, then we have succeeded.
