Community Highlights: Meet Valerio Kikuchi of Sport Club Corinthians Los Angeles (S. C. Corinthians LA)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerio Kikuchi

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
This was the tale of our first year (2023)

Once upon a winter, in the beautiful Torrance, there were eight AYSO friends who shared a love for soccer. As the fall season ended, they faced the dilemma of how to keep playing during the colder Winter months. That’s when the fist S. C. Corinthians LA futsal team was born.

Gathering around the warmth of Christmas time, these friends decided to form a team. Excitement filled the air as they found enough kids to make their dream a reality. Little did they know, this was the beginning of an incredible journey.

From the first day, the boys embraced their newfound passion for futsal. None of them had played it before, but they were determined to learn and grow together. As the seasons changed, so did the boys, both as individuals and as a team.

They trained hard, not only on indoor courts but also on the beach and in the park, honing different skills under the open sky. Friendships deepened, and they became more than just teammates – they attended each other’s birthday parties and shared countless memories.

The first year was a rollercoaster of emotions. Losses stung, victories brought joy, and tears were shed along the way. Despite challenges, they persevered. The boys not only improved their soccer skills but also discovered the importance of resilience and camaraderie.

Amidst the journey, some friends left, but new ones joined, creating a bond that extended beyond the futsal court. Through dedication and teamwork, they found success, reaching four finals in four seasons.

The Remarkable Rise of S. C. Corinthians LA Futsal Club in Its Second Year

In just two short years, a small futsal club in Torrance has transformed into a thriving hub for young athletes across the South Bay. What began in 2023 with only eight eager boys has grown into a powerhouse of over 50 passionate players by 2024. The club’s rapid growth is a testament not only to the rising popularity of futsal but also to the community and competitive spirit the club has fostered.

From Humble Beginnings to Champions

The 2024 season was nothing short of extraordinary. The club didn’t just grow in numbers—it grew in stature. In one year, they clinched three more Los Angeles futsal league titles, solidifying their dominance in the local futsal scene. Their momentum carried them to victory in the prestigious LA Galaxy Cozmo Cup, showcasing their talent on a larger stage.

But the team’s ambitions didn’t stop there. Competing in the U.S. Futsal Regionals and National Championships presented a new set of challenges. Facing off against some of the best teams in the country tested their resilience and skill. While these tournaments pushed them to their limits, they also offered invaluable experience that will fuel their future success.

Building a Futsal Community in the South Bay

More than just winning titles, the club has become a cornerstone of the growing futsal community in Torrance and the South Bay. With each passing season, the demand to join the club has skyrocketed. Unfortunately, the limited availability of futsal courts has forced the club to turn away many eager players. Yet, this challenge underscores the sport’s rising popularity in the region.

The club isn’t content with its current reach. Efforts are underway to expand the futsal community, opening doors for more players to experience the fast-paced, skill-driven game. This growth reflects a larger movement—futsal is no longer just an off-season activity; it’s becoming a year-round passion.

Futsal: The Secret Weapon for Soccer Success

One of the most compelling stories behind the club’s success is how futsal has elevated the players’ overall game. The quick decision-making, tight ball control, and rapid transitions required in futsal have directly translated to improved performance on the soccer field.

Parents and coaches alike have noticed the difference. Soccer club coaches frequently praise the players for their enhanced footwork, vision, and composure under pressure. Curious parents from opposing teams often ask, “What’s the secret?” The answer is simple: futsal.

Looking Ahead

As the club heads into its third year, the focus is clear—continue growing, continue winning, and continue building a community where young players can thrive. With a foundation built on passion, hard work, and community spirit, the future looks bright for Torrance’s futsal scene.

For now, the club celebrates an incredible second year marked by growth, success, and the joy of the game. But make no mistake—this is just the beginning.

The ball keeps rolling, and so does the dream.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running a futsal club comes with significant challenges, many of which fall on the shoulders of Coach Valerio Kikuchi. Balancing the demands of managing the club with his responsibilities as a father and as the owner of a Spanish and Japanese food import and wholesale business is no small feat. On top of that, pursuing national coaching and referee licenses for both soccer and futsal required a substantial investment of time, energy, and financial resources. These certifications were essential for providing players with high-quality coaching, but they added to the already heavy workload that comes with building a competitive and sustainable futsal program.

Another major challenge is the limited understanding and recognition of futsal’s value in youth player development. In countries like Brazil and across Europe, futsal is a foundational sport for young athletes, helping them develop technical skills, quick decision-making, and creativity on the ball before transitioning to outdoor soccer around ages 10 to 12. However, in the U.S., many parents prioritize club soccer, often because of the significant financial investments they’ve made in those programs. This focus can make scheduling difficult, as futsal must often take a backseat to soccer commitments. Educating families about how futsal can dramatically improve their children’s soccer performance is an ongoing challenge, but one that is crucial to shifting mindsets and growing the sport locally.

We’ve been impressed with Sport Club Corinthians Los Angeles (S. C. Corinthians LA), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our futsal club is dedicated to developing young athletes by fostering a passion for the game in a fun, competitive, and skill-driven environment. We specialize in providing high-quality futsal training that emphasizes technical skills, quick decision-making, and creativity on the court—skills that seamlessly translate to the outdoor soccer field. What sets us apart is our commitment to player development over short-term success. We focus on nurturing well-rounded athletes who are confident, skilled, and adaptable, giving them a solid foundation for long-term growth in soccer and beyond.

We are most proud of the vibrant futsal community we’ve built in Torrance and the South Bay. Starting with just eight players, we’ve grown a lot.

Beyond the trophies, our greatest success is seeing our players thrive—receiving compliments from their soccer coaches and inspiring curiosity from other parents about their development. Our goal is to continue expanding access to futsal, educating families about its benefits, and creating opportunities for more players to experience the joy and growth that futsal offers.

Our futsal club offers high-quality training for kids ages 5 to 14, welcoming all levels of experience—from beginners just learning the game to advanced players competing on elite teams. Our programs are designed to develop technical skills, agility, and game intelligence in a fun and supportive environment, helping young athletes grow both on and off the court.

Whether a child is new to futsal or aiming to compete at a higher level, our training focuses on building confidence, creativity, and a strong foundation that benefits players in both futsal and outdoor soccer.

As a nonprofit organization, our mission is to provide exceptional futsal training at affordable prices so that more families can access the benefits of this dynamic sport. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop their skills and passion for the game without financial barriers. However, to continue offering high-quality coaching, equipment, and facilities, we rely on the support of sponsors who share our commitment to youth development and community growth. Partnering with us means investing in the future of young athletes and helping us expand futsal in Torrance and the South Bay.

Our futsal club proudly carries the name of Corinthians, honoring one of Brazil’s most beloved and resilient soccer clubs. Inspired by the rich history and passionate spirit of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, we embody the same values of determination, unity, and excellence. This connection is more than just a name—it reflects our commitment to fostering a winning mentality, strong teamwork, and a love for the game in every player who steps onto the court.

Just like the legendary Brazilian club, we aim to build a community where players and families feel a deep sense of belonging and pride. Our focus on high-quality training, affordability, and community growth aligns with the Corinthians legacy of perseverance and success. By blending Brazilian futsal traditions with our local passion, we are creating an environment where young athletes can thrive and carry forward the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic soccer institutions.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson we’ve learned along our journey is the value of patience and persistence in building both a successful club and a strong community. Growth doesn’t happen overnight—whether it’s developing young players, expanding our programs, or raising awareness about futsal’s benefits. We’ve learned that staying committed to our mission, even when faced with challenges like limited resources, scheduling conflicts, and the need to educate families about the sport, is essential for long-term success.

We’ve also realized that creating a supportive, inclusive environment is just as important as winning championships. Seeing how futsal positively impacts our players—not just in their athletic abilities but in their confidence, teamwork, and passion for the game—has reinforced our belief that success is measured by the community we build and the growth of every individual player. This lesson continues to guide us as we expand and strive to make futsal accessible to more families in our community.
