Today we’d like to introduce you to Obed Fraser
Hi Obed, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I think the best place to start my story would be in college where I was attending undergraduate in my hometown of Bowling Green, KY. I was going to school for a biology degree and like any young adult I had dreams and aspirations that never seemed too big (or big enough). I have a huge love for music and while in school I would spend my weekends DJing at the local college hangouts. I couldn’t get enough of it, producing dance music in my leisure time, DJing in the nighttime and attending lots of music festivals throughout the year. I successfully completed my undergraduate degree and then I applied to Physician Assistant school to receive my master’s in an accredited medical program. While graduate school was in Tennessee I had the opportunity to travel around the country for clinical rotations eventually attending one in Orange County, CA. I immediately fell in love with SoCal. The people, the energy, the culture was nothing like I had experienced before growing up in the south and I was convinced this is where I should end up. Once completing my masters I married my wonderful wife and we packed our things in a small U-haul and drove 32 hours from Kentucky to California and made our new home in Hollywood for the next 5 years. These were easily the best years of my life as I was around one of the best music scenes in the country all while practicing medicine after all my hard work in school. It was during COVID (womp womp) when we were struck with a decision to move either back home to Kentucky or continue living in lockdown. In addition we had our first baby on the way. We couldn’t give up the place we had made our home so we opted to move to the suburbs in Santa Clarita to start our family. During this time I was given the opportunity to start working in MedSpa, performing medical cosmetic procedures for my patients. Although it had been quite some time since I had practiced my music I had found a new love as this field allowed me to merge my medical expertises in a creative way and this was a perfect fit for me. After working for another company for a few years I was inspired to start my own business in the field of Aesthetic medicine and West End MedSpa was born. It was a huge risk to become a small business owner but it felt right and I had found something I was both good at and really enjoyed doing. My favorite part of being the business owner is that I get the opportunity to bring some culture to my city that only I can provide from a combination of my unique life experiences.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship and smooth road don’t usually go in the same sentence! So in short: yes there have been plenty of challenges. To name a few the shift to business ownership means you tend to wear many hats and there seems to be something to do in every minute. In addition when you are new you have to build a name for yourself and to acquire those first few patrons to your business can be difficult as you have very little reputation going for you (big shout out to my early adopter clients). There are days where everything seems to go right and you feel like a success, and there are many days where nothing goes right and you find yourself deep in thought if you made a mistake taking on such a big risk. Those days I feel grateful to lean on the friends and family that believe in me even when I might not believe in myself at the time. I wouldn’t say any of these obstacles have been overcome yet as there is still a lot of growth to be had but I do try to stop and appreciate the day to day wins.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My company is West End MedSpa located in Santa Clarita, CA. We are a medical aesthetics practice that focuses on high quality customer service, expertise in the procedures we perform, and a strong focus on delivering the most outstanding results to our customers.
We focus on improving facial appearance with state of the art treatments performed by medically licensed practitioners. We also focus on weight loss for our clients with use of prescription medications that deliver significant results with minimal side effects.
I am most proud of creating an environment that is both an enjoyable and luxurious experience for our staff and for our customers.
Something we value is trustworthiness and to eliminate any uncertainty that we are the right office for you we offer medical consultations free of charge for new clients. This allows an interested person to get a feel for our office and meet the medical provider to ask all of their questions and receive a complimentary assessment with recommendations. This makes it easy with no risk to visit us and we would love to meet you in person!
What matters most to you? Why?
Three things come to mind: Honesty, culture, and positivity.
Honesty is the foundation for the business as I believe a business that operates with open integrity and has nothing to hide will stand the test of time. I’m sure there are some businesses out there that might be cutting corners or trying to pull the wool of their customers eyes but I refuse to be like that. This approach might get you to faster success but a company built on dishonesty will eventually fall; and I’m proud to say that whatever difficulties might come in the future they will never be because we were dishonest.
Culture is also important because it is the soul of a business. I want there to be a sense of life and excitement felt when staff or customers enter the facility. Every person’s story is unique and I believe every business’ story is unique as well, why not let it shine through? I want people to leave having had an experience rather than a meaningless exchange of money for a service. Culture is the heartbeat of my business and I believe it is the reason we will be remembered.
Lastly positivity is high priority to me. I think we have a choice every day to approach our lives with whatever attitude we choose. I have chosen many attitudes but the one I have landed on to be the best is an attitude of gratefulness and positivity. It allows me to put a smile on a client’s face when they come in, it assures me that my employees feel that are working for a good company, and it tends to reflect what people might be buzzing about you after they leave. I love what I do and I want that sense to rub off on my daily encounters, including while I wear my uniform.
