Daily Inspiration: Meet Eli Berchan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Berchan

Eli, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but my roots and upbringing are deeply tied to Lebanon—the country, not Tennessee. Growing up in Lebanon instilled in me a love for tradition and the beauty of close-knit connections. Later, I went to school in Switzerland, where I refined my understanding of hospitality and event management, blending European sophistication with my Middle Eastern heritage.

My career has taken me across the globe—Atlanta, Dubai, and Paris—each city adding layers of inspiration and experience to my journey. Then in March 2020, I came to Los Angeles for a conference. Little did I know that a global pandemic was about to change everything. With COVID-19 halting the world, I found myself staying in LA, and what started as a temporary adjustment turned into a permanent move. It was here that I started a new venture, SUMAC®, a concept born out of my love for healthy, homestyle cuisine.

But my entrepreneurial journey began long before LA became my home. Back in 2010, I founded Eli Berchan Wedding and Events Creation, a business that combines my passion for creativity with my commitment to personalizing every detail. From intimate micro-weddings to grand celebrations, my goal has always been to create experiences that leave lasting impressions. Whether it’s a picturesque wedding in the Swiss Alps or a chic event in Dubai, I thrive on making each moment unforgettable.

Now, with five years in Los Angeles, I’ve found a city that inspires me daily. It’s where I’ve continued to grow both personally and professionally, blending my global experiences with the vibrant energy of LA. My journey is one of adaptability, passion, and the belief that every challenge can lead to something remarkable.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life has tested me in ways I never imagined. In 2020, my world was turned upside down when Lebanon faced unimaginable devastation. The Beirut port explosion left scars on the city and its people, and for me, it marked the loss of everything I had built there. The blast, coupled with the crippling devaluation and rampant inflation, took away not just material possessions but also a sense of stability and safety. It was as if the very foundation of my life had crumbled beneath me.

As I worked to rebuild, life threw another devastating blow. In 2023, I faced the unimaginable grief of losing my son, Gabriel. There are no words to describe the depth of that loss. It’s a pain that lingers, reshaping who you are and how you see the world. Yet, even in the darkest moments, I knew I had to keep going—for my family, my work, and everything that life continues to demand of me.

Despite these challenges, I found a strength within myself I never knew existed. I’ve continued to show up, to build, and to give, even when my heart felt like it couldn’t bear the weight. Work became both a refuge and a responsibility—a space where I could channel my pain into purpose. My family became my anchor, reminding me that love endures, even in the face of loss.

Life’s trials have taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of holding on, no matter how strong the storm. I may carry scars, but I also carry hope and a deep determination to keep moving forward, creating and living with purpose.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in creating experiences that are meaningful, memorable, and deeply personal. My work spans two key passions: event creation and culinary innovation. I founded **Eli Berchan Wedding and Events Creation** in 2010, where I design weddings and events that are as unique as the people I work with. From intimate gatherings to grand celebrations, I thrive on crafting moments that resonate and tell a story. Later, I started **SUMAC®**, a culinary concept rooted in my love for healthy, homestyle cuisine, blending comfort with sophistication.

What sets me apart is my ability to weave a global perspective into everything I do. Having worked in cities like Atlanta, Dubai, Paris, and Los Angeles, I’ve gained a deep understanding of diverse cultures and tastes, which allows me to tailor each event or dish to reflect individuality and authenticity. I’m known for my attention to detail and for being a trusted partner who turns visions into reality.

I’m most proud of my resilience. Life has tested me, from rebuilding after losing everything in Lebanon to navigating profound personal grief, yet I’ve continued to show up for my work, my family, and my clients. These experiences have deepened my empathy and shaped the way I approach my work—I don’t just create events or meals; I create spaces where people feel seen, celebrated, and connected.

What truly sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to infusing heart into everything I do. Whether it’s an unforgettable wedding, an inspiring event, or a comforting meal, my goal is to leave people feeling enriched and uplifted.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see significant shifts in my industry, driven by a growing demand for personalization, sustainability, and technology integration. Whether it’s event creation or culinary ventures, people are looking for experiences that are not only unique but also deeply meaningful and aligned with their values.

In the events industry, I foresee a continued rise in **intimate, curated gatherings**. Large-scale productions will still have their place, but people are craving connection and authenticity, which smaller, personalized events offer. Destination weddings and events will evolve, emphasizing immersive cultural experiences rather than just scenic backdrops. Sustainability will play a key role, with clients expecting eco-friendly practices and vendors that prioritize green solutions.

Technology will be a game-changer, from immersive event designs using AR/VR to seamless virtual planning tools. Social media will remain a powerful driver, but I believe there will be a shift towards showcasing real, raw, behind-the-scenes moments rather than polished perfection. Authenticity will matter more than ever.

In the culinary world, the focus on health and wellness will grow, with more demand for fresh, locally sourced ingredients and menus that cater to dietary preferences. I also see a movement towards storytelling in food—menus that reflect history, tradition, and purpose.

Overall, the future of the industry is about meaningful connection. People want experiences that make them feel alive, whether through heartfelt events or thoughtful cuisine. I’m excited to adapt, innovate, and continue creating with purpose as these trends unfold.
