Daily Inspiration: Meet Tiffany Lin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Lin

Hi Tiffany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey with the outdoors began unexpectedly in 2015, igniting a spark that would transform my life. Raised in a sheltered environment, I was invited to hike Mount Whitney – a peak I had never even heard of before. Despite my inexperience, I trained diligently, and on August 25, 2015, I stood atop the highest peak in the contiguous United States for the first, but certainly not the last, time.

This pivotal experience opened my eyes to the vast beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the accessibility of weekend road trips throughout the Southwest USA. Eager to share my newfound love for outdoor adventures, I started documenting my experiences through my blog (www.FollowTiffsJourney.com) and Instagram account (@followtiffsjourney).

As a Southern California-based Taiwanese American raised far from nature, my story resonated with many urban dwellers who believed the outdoors were out of reach. My mission became clear: to inspire others, especially those with limited exposure to nature, to explore the great outdoors.

In 2021, my journey took a dramatic turn as I sought to challenge myself further. Despite my fear of heights and dislike of cold weather being a SoCal-native, I ventured into ice climbing when invited by a new friend. Something about the challenge drew me in, leading me to explore various climbing disciplines like high altitude mountaineering and alpine rock climbing.

My experiences taught me that fears don’t have to limit our potential. Last year, I started organizing Women’s Intro to Ice Climbing group trips, aiming to help other women overcome their fears and embrace new challenges in the outdoors. These initiatives embody my belief that “I can’t” is just a mindset waiting to be transformed.

Through my content creation and group trips, I encourage others to replace “I can’t” with “I’ll try,” proving that with determination, extraordinary experiences are within everyone’s grasp. What began as a single mountain hiking trip has become a mission to inspire, challenge, and transform – not just for myself, but for every person who believes adventure is out of their reach.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey into the outdoors and content creation hasn’t been smooth, especially given my background. Coming from a traditional Taiwanese family, pursuing a life centered around outdoor adventures and social media was not the path my parents envisioned. Their expectations of a conventional career led to challenging conversations as I worked to bridge the gap between my passions and their hopes for me. Even now, years into my journey, these conversations remain difficult as I continue to navigate the balance between my chosen path and my family’s traditional expectations.

As someone literally raised to be scared of life, I faced a steep learning curve in the outdoors. Each new skill presented its own set of challenges, from basic backpacking techniques to advanced mountaineering and technical climbing. This cautious upbringing made my journey more difficult, amplifying the moments of self-doubt and fear as I pushed beyond my comfort zone.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a content creator and outdoor enthusiast, my work revolves around inspiring and empowering others to embrace adventure and challenge their limits. I specialize in creating engaging content that showcases the beauty of nature and the transformative power of outdoor experiences, particularly in hiking, backpacking, and ice climbing.

My blog, www.FollowTiffsJourney.com, and Instagram account @followtiffsjourney serve as platforms where I share detailed trip reports, gear reviews, and practical tips for outdoor adventures. I’m known for my honest, relatable approach to storytelling, often highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of my experiences.

One of my proudest achievements is organizing Women’s Intro to Ice Climbing trips. These events not only introduce women to a thrilling sport but also create a supportive community where participants can face their fears and discover their inner strength.

What sets me apart is my journey from a sheltered, urban upbringing to becoming an advocate for outdoor exploration. My background allows me to connect with and inspire those who might not typically see themselves as “outdoorsy.” I bring a unique perspective that bridges the gap between city life and wilderness adventures, making the outdoors feel more accessible to a diverse audience.

My work goes beyond just showcasing beautiful landscapes; it’s about encouraging personal growth, building confidence, and fostering a deep appreciation for nature. Whether it’s through my writing, photography, or hosted experiences, my goal is to show that with the right mindset and preparation, anyone can embark on their own transformative outdoor journey.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for finding a mentor is simple: just ask. I’ve learned that reaching out to experienced individuals in your industry, especially those you admire, can be incredibly valuable. While it might feel intimidating to contact someone you don’t know, remember that if you never ask, the answer will always be no.

In my experience, many professionals are surprisingly willing to share their knowledge and offer guidance, especially if they see you’re making genuine efforts to learn and grow. The key is to be respectful of their time, clear about what you’re seeking, and sincere in your approach.

I’ve had success with this method several times. It’s important to do your research, craft a thoughtful message, and be specific about what kind of advice or mentorship you’re looking for. Even a brief conversation or email exchange can provide invaluable insights and potentially open doors to further opportunities.

Remember, everyone started somewhere, and many successful people are happy to pay it forward. So, don’t let fear hold you back – take that first step and reach out. You might be pleasantly surprised by the responses you receive and the relationships you build.
