Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Ostrach
Hi Madison, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began dancing at a young age, starting at a neighborhood studio in Long Island, New York before it shut down leading to my transition to an intermediate, old-school competition studio. Dance was merely a hobby until I turned 16, when I began venturing into New York City to pursue advanced training at institutions such as Peridance and Broadway Dance Center. During this time I also started attending conventions as an independent. After a gap year dedicated to strengthening my modern and ballet techniques, I was ready to audition and got accepted to my top school, SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance.
While completing my BFA, I discovered a passion for commercial dance, which inspired me to take various trips to Los Angeles. Captivated by the creative landscape and the differences in the industry, I ultimately decided to move here to pursue my career and continue to grow as an artist.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I faced challenges transitioning into a new studio in my younger years, struggling to fit into a highly competitive environment where I often felt isolated and lacked a supportive oversight – The studio owners prioritized conformity over individuality, making it difficult to find my footing. During my gap year, I worked hard to strengthen my skills but still felt behind my classmates in college who were already familiar with the curriculum or had prior extensive performance backgrounds. However, these experiences taught me resilience and the importance of self driven growth – They also showed me the importance of forming relationships with mentors who share core values similar to my own.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in contemporary dance and floor work. My unique movement quality and improvisational skill help me stand out in a room full of others in the industry. Currently, I am a member of MashUp Contemporary Dance Company and signed with Go2 Talent, pursuing freelance opportunities such as music videos, commercials, and live performances. A career highlight is my solo performance in Jessie Lee Thorne’s evening-length work titled Anarcha.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My two favorite books are ‘You Are a BadA**’ by Jen Sincero and ‘The Art of Not Giving a F***” by Mark Manson – Both are very motivational and empowering. My favorite podcasts include Heuberman Lab, a perfect roadway to learn new things, and Giggly Squad for a quick “brain-break”!
