Life & Work with Mikyla Bordner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikyla Bordner

Mikyla , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Passion. I think thats. the one word I can pin down as how I’ve achieved each goal I have. I think not looking to the egoism of creating gives you the freedom of creativity and creation. Enjoy the ride, theres no knowing where it will take you.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The financial and monetary aspect of choosing an artistic pathway has always been precarious. I have been in and out of so many jobs and have learned so many random skills in the hospitality industry, in particular. However, along the way I have met and connected with so many people who have entrenched themselves in the culture of hope and possibility and who have made me who I am along the way. If you enjoy the journey, the end result doesn’t matter as much.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Storytelling through film is the easiest way to put it. It is hard to find one thing I like like to do on the daily. Just last week I was a grip for one of my pals on set and had the most amazing time. Last month I produced a feature and weeks before that acted in a feature. I think at the core of it, I just love storytelling. I love being a piece of the artistic puzzle and a part of the collaboration that comes from making movies, whatever that may be. The more I can learn about each position, the more I understand the world around me through the cinematic lens and how to explain it and question it on camera.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
You know, I don’t like to admit it, but I am not a reader. I have always tried to be, but I think there is a part of my brain that just can’t grasp words on a page, much like other people can- though I do find books fascinating, and a club I so wish I could be a part of. However, one book that I have always clung to, and this is probably a bit outdated of me, is “Audition” by Michael Shurtleff. I think every filmmaker, especially in the directorial and camera department, should read this as it is the key to the most rudimentary yet complex elements of acting, storytelling, and performance.
