Today we’d like to introduce you to Minjung Ahn

Hi Minjung, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was drawn to the idea of tattoos because they allow people to express their unique personalities and capture meaningful memories.
I studied design in university, which sparked my interest and talent in drawing, so it was natural for me to develop an interest in tattooing.

At that time, I had the opportunity to meet Sol Tattoo, a well-known tattoo artist, and learn the craft from him.
I also had the experience of working at his studio, which was the largest tattoo studio in Korea at the time.
I believe this experience helped me grow quickly as a tattoo artist.

That connection eventually led me to Los Angeles.
I was offered a position as an artist at a new tattoo shop opening in the U.S. (@vismstudio).
Thanks to this, I’ve been able to share and showcase my designs to a wider audience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I spend almost every day working on designs or doing tattoo sessions.
There were times back then when I felt physically exhausted and drained.
But looking back at where I am now, I feel like the biggest challenges in my journey were all overcome through my own effort.
Now that it’s all in the past, I don’t really see those challenges as big obstacles anymore. 🙂

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I always enjoy media and games related to my work, such as games, anime, puzzles, and LEGO.
Just like how popular anime and games continue to update and release new products, I feel like I’m always aiming to push for something new in my tattoos as well.
My artistic expansion began with these hobbies.

I work as a tattoo artist, reinterpreting the things I love into more original and creative images.
Even with the same character, the desired traits and expressions are always different.
It’s because the points that make them appealing vary from person to person.
I think my style comes from clearly recognizing and empathizing with those points, then capturing them with my skills and color palette.
I have an excellent ability to reinterpret all objects, animals, and plants as new characters.
I can also reinterpret existing characters with more vibrant colors.
Sometimes, I experiment with combining and mixing characters that clients love, creating creative ideas.
Since I also love these cute designs with various colors, I believe people who share the same hobbies and preferences will enjoy my Instagram.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think the basic qualities a tattoo artist should have are drawing talent and skill with tools.

First, the ability to draw is essential.
Some people can replicate objects in a photographic style, while others develop their own unique artistic style that others can’t easily imitate.

Second, adaptability to different tools is important.
Whether using a pencil, tattoo machine, computer, or iPad, you should be able to create the same artwork across different mediums.
Understanding the tattoo machine is a fundamental requirement, as is the ability to create your own color palettes by blending the various inks available on the market.
Having a good sense of color is also a crucial skill.

Finally, responsibility for your work and communication with clients are key. Since you’re leaving a permanent design on someone’s skin, it’s important to approach even small projects with a sense of responsibility and care.
Building trust and ensuring clear communication with clients is also essential in the tattoo process.
