Hi Azalea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey as a photographer began as a way to preserve meaningful moments with the people I love. I’ve always had a passion for creativity and storytelling, but it wasn’t until August 2023 that I decided to take photography seriously. What started as a personal hobby has blossomed into Azalea Chan Photography, a business that allows me to capture the beauty and authenticity of life’s most precious moments.

One of the biggest motivators in my journey has been the people who believe in me—my fiancé, my family, and my amazing clients who continue to trust me to tell their stories. From maternity and family sessions to styled shoots and weddings, each experience has taught me something new and pushed me to grow as both an artist and a person.

There have been challenges along the way, like balancing my personal health and navigating the growing demands of running a business. But every step, even the hardest ones, has reminded me why I love what I do: I get to freeze memories in time for others to cherish.

Looking ahead, I feel immense gratitude for the journey so far and excitement for what’s to come. Whether I’m capturing a quiet moment between a couple or the energy of a vibrant styled shoot, my mission is always the same: to create timeless images filled with heart and meaning.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to building Azalea Chan Photography has been anything but smooth, but every challenge has shaped me into the photographer I am today. One of the biggest hurdles has been navigating the steep learning curve that comes with taking a passion and turning it into a business. From mastering technical skills to understanding the ins and outs of client management, I’ve learned to embrace every opportunity as a chance to grow.

Another challenge has been balancing my personal health with the demands of this career. There have been times when I’ve had to pause, recalibrate, and remind myself that taking care of my well-being is just as important as meeting deadlines or booking sessions. These moments have taught me the value of self-care and the importance of building a sustainable workflow.

Additionally, starting this journey as a newer photographer in a saturated market was intimidating. I’ve had to remind myself that my unique perspective and genuine connection with clients are what set me apart. Building confidence in my abilities has been a journey, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding.

Through it all, I’ve learned that challenges are a natural part of growth, and with every obstacle, I’ve found new reasons to love this path I’ve chosen.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a photographer, my work is all about capturing connection, emotion, and authenticity. I specialize in maternity, couples, and engagement photography, though I also offer lifestyle portrait sessions for families and individuals. What I’m most proud of is the ability to create a safe, comfortable environment for my clients, allowing their true personalities and relationships to shine through in every photo.

What sets Azalea Chan Photography apart is my focus on creating timeless images with heart and meaning. I take the time to get to know each client, tailoring every session to reflect their unique story. Whether it’s the quiet anticipation of a maternity shoot, the joy of an engagement, or the love shared in a family session, I aim to deliver photographs that feel as special as the moments themselves.

I believe my approach stands out because it’s rooted in collaboration and genuine care. I don’t just take pictures; I build relationships. Every session is a partnership where my clients and I work together to create something beautiful. The trust they place in me is something I never take for granted, and it’s what inspires me to keep growing as an artist.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The photography industry is constantly evolving, and over the next 5-10 years, I see several exciting trends and changes shaping its future. One major shift is the increasing demand for authenticity and storytelling in imagery. Clients are moving away from overly staged and edited photos, favoring images that feel real, raw, and deeply personal. This aligns perfectly with my style and focus as a photographer.

Additionally, advancements in technology will continue to impact the way we work. From AI-powered editing tools to enhanced camera capabilities, photographers will have even more resources to bring their visions to life. However, I believe the heart of photography—human connection and emotion—will always remain irreplaceable, and that’s what I’ll continue to prioritize.

Another trend I foresee is a growing emphasis on collaboration within the creative community. Styled shoots, shared resources, and mentorship opportunities are already becoming more common, and I believe this will only expand. It’s an exciting time to be part of an industry that thrives on creativity, innovation, and connection.

As for my own work, I plan to continue adapting and growing with these changes, always staying true to my mission of capturing meaningful, timeless moments for my clients.
