Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Ferguson
Hi Brandon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In Hamden, CT, where I grew up, classical music was a household staple. Therefore, I started taking piano lessons at the age of 5, and continued my musical education through high school. Berklee College of Music seemed to be the next best decision.
While studying at Berklee, I learned how to produce, and make connections with up & coming artists (Michael Christmas, Boogie, H.E.R. & more). These placements emboldened my sense of hubris, and felt that moving to LA was the best decision, despite my lack of employment in the city.
After a few years of financially struggling, even with a Grammy award under my belt, I was lucky enough to be a part of Emmy Meli’s breakout single, “I Am Woman” (RIAA Gold Certified), right at the end of 2021. Since then, I’ve broadened my reputation in the city as a guitar player, most recently with an upcoming band; “High Quality Porn Music”.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road.
My biggest struggles have always been (and probably always will be) financial. Unfortunately, musicians aren’t paid well (if at all) in the early stages of their career, unless if nepotism benefits them.
So, for years, my latte-making-abilities paid the bills in full, while my musical endeavors went nowhere.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is a representation of what I may be feeling at any given moment, combined with a full understanding of harmony. I specialize in collaborations, both because they’re so enjoyable, and because of the infinite outcomes that two (or more) creative minds can conjure.
I’m known for, and most proud of, my appreciation for nearly every genre of music, both good and bad. Part of every recording session with artists includes listening time – where we digest & discuss what we’re hearing/feeling.
How do you define success?
Success seems to be more of a state of mind, than an literal goal post, that needs to be passed. To me, material successes come after mental successes. For example, if you want to get in shape, you have to believe that it’s possible, before making the effort of going to the gym.
The same goes with music – How are you going to make a great song, if you don’t believe you can make one?
