Meet Erika Vaught of Arts district DTLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Vaught

Hi Erika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started in the hair industry at 18 and quickly committed all of my time to my career. I was blessed to work with my team back in Detroit Michigan for 10 years before I had the opportunity to move out to Los Angeles. Once in Los Angeles I was lucky enough to get in contact with my current home HAIR Los Angeles where I explore the art of hair everyday. I believe my dedication and passion within this industry has driven me all of these years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road is not always smooth as I’m sure anyone feels within their career. My experience has been none the less amazing though. Something I love about the industry is how you may find yourself in different challenges pushing you to continue to grow and learn as hair trends seem to change every day. Also the energy and love that we as hair dressers put into our craft. You can find yourself with little room on your plate quite easily. For me I am lucky to be able to turn to a team of people during the struggles for encouragement and guidance.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for my creative color and cutting skills. Our salon is definitely known for pushing the boundaries of what I consider art for your head. I believe what sets me apart from others is my unwavering dedication to my craft and to the people in my chair.
I am most proud of my accomplishments within the creative space or hair dressing. I knew that is what I wanted to explore within this industry and I pushed to do so even if I was not in a proper demographic for that back in Michigan. Which has led me to where I am today living that dream in Los Angeles.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think having an open mind and an understanding for others is important within my industry. My main objective is to lift someone up in my chair and bring out their confidence within. As a hair stylist we often hear that we are also therapists. I think that is something we take very seriously because we consider clients our family and our friends. So it is important for me to be that person that they find to be understanding and comforting for the people who support me and my business.
