Conversations with Danine Dean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danine Dean

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been curious about people. I can remember being very young and having ideas about what and why people behaved the way they do. I have also really enjoyed helping others. I can remember helping my grandmother with simple tasks to elaborate meals. I have found a huge joy in connecting with people and learning about them. As a psychologist I get the opportunity to explore the cognitive processes of people, as I am able to better understand their emotions and behaviors. This hopefully leads to us collaborating together to find ways to help them live a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a completely smooth road; there have been several challenges along the way, including navigating periods of financial uncertainty, overcoming personal hurdles whether that is with family or friends, and establishing a sense of purpose within my work. There were moments I felt that I wasn’t a great psychologist based on the amount of success or lack there of I was experiencing from the population I was seeing in that moment. It took some time to feel more confident, to have less imposter syndrome, and to really value and believe in the professional I already was and to the type of professional I was becoming.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I offer mental health support, focusing on areas such as anxiety, depression, parenting, relationship issues or life transitions. With a compassionate and client-centered approach, I tailor my approach to meet you where you are, recognizing that each individual’s journey is unique.. I am able to provide a safe, empathetic, and judgment-free space for self-exploration. I’ve been told that my warm and very relatable energy helps many people feel comfortable and confident to continue to learn and grow themselves. I think my life, education and early career experiences have allowed me to see mental health in ways that are more than just challenges but a personal journey that is different for everyone.
I’m most proud of the moments where I can see growth in my patients and have them feel a sense of accomplishment within themselves for dedicating time and effort to making their lives more meaningful and fulfilling.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Los Angeles for its near-perfect weather year-round, beautiful beaches, diverse neighborhoods, thriving entertainment industry, vibrant culture, and endless opportunities for outdoor activities. These all contributing to a dynamic and exciting lifestyle.
On the other hand, traffic can be difficult to navigate and is exacerbated by a lack of viable solutions. And the cost of living seems to make some of these experiences more difficult to manage. And there are a lot of people everywhere ! If you can imagine tons of people but still feeling lonely, LA can sometimes feel like a place where everyone is constantly on the move and you have to get out the way.
