Rising Stars: Meet Soulocust

Today we’d like to introduce you to Soulocust.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
(“Reverend” Kyle P. Davis – lead vocals, guitar)

I met Alexander Blanco, Jnr. (drums, vocals) and Johnny Rico (guitar) in high school, and we were in the jazz band together. Around the same time, I got to know Ray Steward (bass, vocals) through my parents because both of our parents worked together. We instantly bonded.

After my first serious band broke up, I initially hit up Alex with the idea of forming a group, and then Johnny and Ray followed soon after.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
(Alexander “Blam Blam” Blanco, Jnr. – drums)

Well, we faced many of the same challenges as other groups; working around our job schedules, persistence, focusing on the musicality while also tending to the business aspects (advertising, recording, gigging, etc.), but the main challenge was establishing our core members.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
(Alexander) It’s our chemistry, and especially now it’s our dedication to the group.

(Johnny Rico – guitar) Most bands don’t approach it with the freedom of being openly creative and working on it as a piece of art.

(Alexander) We don’t niche ourselves… our musicality helps to individualize our sound.

(Kyle) Exactly, we don’t pigeon-hole ourselves into just one thing, we bring a variety.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
(Johnny) Being active, playing music with the intention of playing music wherever the opportunity lies.

(Kyle) Playing gigs wherever you can. There’s no better advertisement for you or your group than a live show, an experience.
